She looked away again, but she heard the loud crack as her dad’s bone snapped. She was shocked when he didn’t scream or even make a noise. She looked at him because she needed to know he was okay.

He was grinding his teeth and grimacing, but he hadn’t moved a muscle as Doc reset his arm. She couldn’t believe he was sitting so still. Luckily, it would heal pretty quickly so the pain should ease soon.

Chris noticed her watching him and gave her a small smile, “I’m okay, don’t worry. I’ll be all healed up in a few hours. Lay down and get some rest. Your brother is going to be asleep for a while I think.”

“Okay, I guess I’ll try.” She pushed the bed right next to Marshall’s before she climbed on and got comfortable under the blanket. It was surprisingly soft. All the hospital beds she’d been in before had felt like cardboard. So far, she was very impressed with the set up they had here.

Mostly, werewolves healed on their own without the need for medical attention. But sometimes surgery was required or for slower healing wounds they would need to be patched up. Like Chris’ arm and her head.

As she lay there, holding her brother’s hand, she thought back to the accident. To the man she killed and the man she helped Marshall kill. Then she thought about Dimitri. She knew their deaths would haunt her for a long time. The images of them were burned into her brain and she couldn’t get them out.

She didn’t want to close her eyes. She knew if she did, she wouldn’t be able to avoid their faces. It didn’t matter how justified their deaths were, she still felt dirty. She felt like a monster.

Being a part of this world had brought her a brother and a father, and possibly some of the best friends she could ever dream of having. But at what cost. Would it cost her soul to be a part of this world?

And if that is the price, was she willing to pay it?

She studied her brother’s face. He looked so peaceful, laying there fast asleep. When he was like this, all the worry smoothed away and his features relaxed. It was so easy to see the resemblance they shared. Aside from their coloring, they had very similar features.

It made her heart ache.

She imagined them having little adventures when they were kids, getting into trouble, and always having each other’s backs. Just like him and Aiden.

Now that she had him in her life, she was terrified of losing him. She couldn’t handle losing anyone else. Today had been a close call. One she hoped they never had to make again. Though, she wasn’t too hopeful with the prophecy and Andre hanging around.

She was waiting for the next shoe to drop, and she knew they may not all make it out of this alive.

But she didn’t want to think about that now. So instead, she watched Marshall sleep, comforting herself with the steady beat of his heart. Thankfully, his fever had gone down, and his heart rate was back to normal. So now they just had to wait.

Her eyes started getting heavy. She knew she was supposed to stay awake, but maybe a small nap would be okay.

As her eyes started to close, there was a loud bang, jerking her fully awake again.

A moment later, Sorcha rushed into the room, tears tracking down her face.

Raven stood up from her seat in the corner and took her hand, “He’s okay. They’re all okay.”

“No one told me. I had to find out from Aiden. He’s back by the way, and probably right behind me.” She was twisting her fingers together, a habit she did whenever she was nervous.

Kenzie patted the bed beside her, “Come sit. I’m sorry we didn’t tell you. Honestly, none of us are thinking very clearly.”

Sorcha sniffled and wiped the tears from her cheeks, then walked over and sat on the bed beside Kenzie. She kept her eyes on Marshall though, following every rise of his chest, “He’s really okay?”

Kenzie nodded, “Yes, he just got dosed by a tranquilizer dart, so he’ll be out for a while.”

Kenzie laid back down and scooted over enough so there was room for Sorcha. “Wanna lay down and I’ll tell you what happened?”

Sorcha looked about ready to fall over so Kenzie figured it would be better if she laid down too, that way she wouldn’t worry about her toppling off the bed.

Sorcha startled for a second, then shrugged, “Okay.”

Once they were both laying down, they faced each other and Kenzie told her everything that had happened that day, starting with training and ending with her walking in the room.

When she was done, she was parched. Thankfully Doc had set a small table beside the bed with bottles of water. She guzzled the water greedily as she waited for Sorcha to say something.

“Me and Marshall are not together. But the second that I heard he was hurt, I thought I would die. I had to know he was okay. I ran here as fast as I could.” She gripped Kenzie’s hand hard, “Thank you for protecting him.”

Kenzie smiled, “He’s my brother. I will never let anything happen to him if I can help it.”
