Sorcha sighed, “I know. He feels the same way about you. We’ve talked about you a lot. He feels like he should have come for you sooner. I know he feels guilty about your mom, even though I’ve told him it wasn’t his fault. He’s never said it, but I think he was very sad not having you around when he was growing up. Even with Aiden, he felt alone.”

Kenzie burrowed deeper into the covers, “I felt the same way. But I plan on sticking around now.”

“I hope so.” Sorcha’s voice sounded wistful, “You kind of know what happened to me.”

When Kenzie nodded, Sorcha continued, “Well, I’ve been trying to deal with it. To process and move on from it. But I still haven’t been able to let Marshall in. I know my distance hurts him, though he will never say that. But I want to be whole for him, to be worthy. Right now, I just feel broken. And I am so scared that one day, he will get tired of waiting. That he will find someone else and move on.”

Kenzie squeezed Sorcha’s hand, “He won’t. I know you can’t see it right now, but the way he looks at you, you’re all he thinks about. Trust me. He’s not going anywhere.”

Sorcha didn’t look convinced but nodded anyway, “Okay. Well, I’m going to keep trying. But what I really wanted to say was thank you. For being my friend and helping me. Somehow you and the others, have helped me to feel more at home and comfortable than I have felt in a long time.”

“Honey, it was easy. All we did was get to know you, and you are a person worth knowing. We all wanted to be your friend. Plus, whether you and my brother are together now or not, you’re family.” And Kenzie cherished family. She didn’t have much left and was going to hold on to them.

Sorcha’s eyes teared up, but she blinked them away, “Thank you.”

“Always.” Kenzie’s eyes were getting hard to keep open again, so she closed them, “I think I’m going to take a little nap now, if that’s okay. I can’t seem to keep my eyes open.”

Sorcha shuffled a little on the bed, “Um… I don’t know if that’s okay. Didn’t Doc say to stay awake?”

Kenzie just grunted. She didn’t want to stay awake. She vaguely felt the bed move, but ignored it, figuring Sorcha was getting comfortable. She felt herself drifting and didn’t fight it.

Chapter 23.

Aiden

Aiden followed behind Sorcha as she raced to get to Marshall. He had spoken to Chris and knew everyone was okay, so he followed at a slightly slower pace.

Thankfully, with Dale’s help it hadn’t taken long to get the mess cleaned up off the road. But it was definitely going to be a problem. Four wolves were dead, and someone would want payback. It wouldn’t matter that they had attacked them. It would give Andre an excuse to take action and they would need to defend themselves against whatever he threw at them.

When Aiden reached Doc’s house, he stepped inside without knocking. Chris, Doc and Raven were all standing in the living room talking in hushed whispers.

Raven saw him first and nodded toward the first patient room, “They’re in there. Sorcha just went in. Marshall is still asleep, and Kenzie is resting.”

Aiden took a look in the room to see Sorcha sitting on the side of Kenzie’s bed. He studied Kenzie for a moment to reassure himself that she was doing okay, then decided to give them a few minutes before going in.

He turned back to the group in the living room. Chris asked, “Did everything get cleaned up okay?”

Aiden sighed, “Yes. Dale called in Jeff and Samson. We were able to take care of the bodies, and Bennie came and towed away the cars. Dale impounded the two SUVs and Bennie took Marshall’s truck and your car to his shop to see if they can be fixed. Your car doesn’t look too bad. But Marshall’s truck might be totaled.”

Chris ran a hand through his hair and nodded, “I don’t care about the cars and Marshall won’t either. I’m just glad they are both okay.”

Doc placed a hand on Chris’ shoulder for support, “They will be fine. Just a few bumps and bruises.”

Chris shook his head, “It was close, too close. If it had been just them, they probably would have been taken. I distracted two of them, which gave them a chance, but Marshall still got shot. It was a tranq, but still.”

Aiden agreed. Dale, Jeff and Samson were pack members and cops. They were going to investigate the dead men to see what information they could find. Hopefully, they would find something to give them an edge, because so far, they were just reacting. They needed to go on the offensive.

None of them wanted a war with Andre, but he wasn’t giving them a choice and he obviously was not going to leave them alone. The pack was always ready for an attack, every wolf of age knew how to fight and would do their part. He hoped it wouldn’t come to that, but he wasn’t optimistic about it.

Aiden would speak with Marshall when he woke up, but he was thinking they needed to make a move. At the very least, they needed to send someone to scope out Blood Moon and Black Falls. Try to see if they could figure out their plan.

Aiden pulled himself out of his thoughts and tuned back into the conversation, “The weirdest part was that we couldn’t see them until it was too late. Kenzie warned me a second before they hit us. There was no time to react. They were also willing to kill me. They were armed to take Marshall and Kenzie though. Whatever this is, Andre has gone way too far.”

“I was thinking the same thing.” Aiden said, “We need to stop sitting around waiting for something to happen.”

Raven huffed out an angry breath, “Is that what we’ve been doing? I could have sworn we have been spending every single day training and researching. Trying to figure out what the bloody hell is going on.”

“That’s not how I meant it. I just mean, we need to do more. I think we should send out scouts to see if they can learn anything. Next time, we might not be so lucky.”
