Aiden sent the email with the updated blueprints for a building they were updating downtown, then closed his laptop.

He checked the clock on his desk and realized he’d been working for longer than he’d intended, as usual. He started to stand up when his office door opened but sat back down when he saw who it was.

“What do you want Annabelle?” He was not in the mood to deal with her today.

She sauntered over to his desk and placed her hands on the surface so she could lean close to his face. “I need your help Aiden.”

He pushed his chair farther away from the desk, putting distance between them, “With what?”

“I have a nuisance complaint that I need you to take care of for me.” She started walking around the desk, running her finger along the shiny surface. When she was standing next to his chair, she sat on the edge of his desk, her leg grazing his thigh.

He sighed and moved his leg away from hers, “What’s your complaint?”

“My neighbor’s dog won’t stop barking in the middle of the night. They leave him outside all night long and all he does is yap. I haven’t gotten any sleep in a week. Can you do something about that for me?” She slid farther onto the desk and threw her leg over his lap, so she was straddling him.

He started to push father back from her when she hooked her stiletto heels around the arms of his chair and pulled him closer.

She was also wearing a very short skirt. With her legs hanging open, it left little to the imagination. He looked away quickly and tried to stand but she pushed him back down and pressed herself against him.

“Come on baby, you can look. I know you like what you see.” She wrapped her hand around his neck and started to pull him in for a kiss.

He stood up and placed his hands on the desk on either side of her. Then he leaned into her, close to her ear so he could whisper, “Annabelle, I have a mate. You know that. Even if I didn’t, I want nothing to do with you. We slept together once, because I was drunk off my ass. It will never happen again.”

He stepped away from her, “Understand?”

She placed her hands on his cheeks, “She’s not really your mate Aiden. She’ll never give you what you need. You need me.”

He pulled her hands down, “She is everything I want. You are nothing more to me than another pack member. One who better steer clear of me from now on.”

“Aw baby, come on. Be reasonable.” She was pouting now, and it did not look good on her super thin features.

“I am deadly serious Annabelle. These games you’re playing are done.” He turned to leave but stopped when he saw the door was still open and Kenzie was standing in the doorway.

He knew from the look on her face that she had seen everything. He knew it probably had looked bad, “Kenzie, I can explain.”

She held up a hand to silence him, “No need.”

Chapter 24.

Kenzie

Something brushed her face, tickling her. She swatted at it, trying to brush whatever it was away. When someone took her hand, she opened her eyes, coming face to face with Marshall’s startling blue eyes.

She gasped and jerked up in bed so she could fling herself at her brother. “Oh my gosh, I was so worried!”

He chuckled as he hugged her tight, “I’m fine, just pissed.”

“I was so scared for you. The dart was wrapped in black magic. Raven had to remove it. Then we just had to wait for you to wake up.” She knew she was rambling but didn’t care. She squeezed him tighter.

“Kenzie, I can’t breathe.” He laughed as she loosened her grip and pulled back to look at him. The cuts on his face and arms were healed and there weren’t any more bruises that she could see.

He gently touched the bandage on her head, “Are you hurt?”

She poked at the little band-aide to see if it was still tender. When there was no pain, she pulled the tape off, “Nope, all healed up.”

“Good. How’s dad?”

She looked around but didn’t see him in the room, “He broke his arm and had some cuts and bruises but nothing too bad. He was here but, we’ve both been asleep awhile, so I guess he left.”
