Corine started to shake as Sabine stepped closer to her. She shook her head furiously, “I swear I don’t know anything else. I helped him because he promised the werewolves would be more powerful, would be able to take full control. I wanted that strength. It was selfish, but all I have ever cared about is the strength of the werewolves. He did not tell me anything else.”

William studied her for a moment, “Are you the one who bugged the council offices?”

Corine looked away from him but nodded.

“And did you monitor those tapes or did Andre?” He asked.

“Andre did. I never knew what information he was hoping to gain.” Corine still wouldn’t meet his eyes.

He studied her for a moment, “Are you the one who leaked information to the other council members?”

Corine shook her head, “No, that was not me. You know I would never do that.

William gripped her chin and turned her face, so she had no choice but to look him in the eyes, “I expected better of you.”

Corine’s face crumbled, “I am so sorry William.”

He turned away from her and walked out of the cell to stand next to Chris. Apparently, he was done questioning her.

Kenzie once again felt bad for Corine. It had been selfish, but in a way, she had been trying to help the werewolves. But as the saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Sabine made a clucking sound with her tongue, then smiled at Corine, “Well, it seems you have nothing else to tell us, so I suppose it’s time for sentencing. As you know, the punishment for treason, is death.”

Corine looked Sabine in the eye, not a bit of fear showing on her face now, “Go ahead and kill me. You like to play like you’re such a good person, but you are a bigger monster than all of us. I hope Andre rips your throat out.”

Sabine stared at Corine for a moment, then took a step back, “Colin, would you do the honors?”

Colin stepped forward, and Kenzie looked away again. She would not watch this.

Thankfully, Aiden pushed her toward the stairs and still holding one of his hands, she raced for Marshall’s office. As they reached the top, Aiden closed the door behind them to block out any sound.

She turned into his arms and covered her face with her hands as the sobs started to wrack her body. He held onto her and let her cry without a word.

After a few minutes, the tears slowed and she could finally speak again, “Thank you for getting me out of there.”

He wiped her tears away, then kissed her cheek, “I didn’t want to stay for that either. Corine wasn’t a bad person. She was just misguided and perhaps used. Her selfishness made her an easy target for Andre. But she knew what she was doing and what the price would be. It was her choice.”

Kenzie nodded her understanding, “So, what now?”

Aiden looked over at the clock, “We only have three hours before we have to meet Andre. We need to prepare as best we can and get together some of the guards to come with us. The others should be up soon. Let’s go find Jordan and get things moving.”

“Okay.” Before he could pull away, she pulled him closer for a deep kiss. She poured herself into him, trying to show him how much he meant to her.

When they finally separated, they were both breathing heavily. Neither said anything else as they headed out of the office.

No words were needed.

Hand in hand, they headed off to prepare for a battle. She wasn’t sure what was going to happen, but she knew it would not be a peaceful meeting.

Chapter 28.

Kenzie

Kenzie’s nerves were shot. She was so wired, she felt like she might just bounce out of the car seat at any moment.

After the council took care of Corine, they started throwing orders around to get everyone moving to meet Andre.

It was funny seeing a bunch of burly werewolf men climb into a couple of big black SUVs. Luckily, the council and their guards took their own vehicle. She wasn’t sure she could deal with anything else from them right now.
