She had been too scared to ask what they’d done to Corine, but she figured they killed her.

The council didn’t seem like the type to have mercy on someone who betrayed them.

Thankfully, the people riding in the SUV with her were all the people she trusted. Chris was driving with Marshall riding shot gun and playing with the radio. Raven and Aiden were sitting on either side of her. And stuffed in the back, were Jordan, Gabriel, and Gage.

She was doing her best to not look at the guards behind her. They were so squished together with their large frames and wide shoulders that they looked like they were in pain.

She figured the goal was to take as few vehicles as possible, but it really wasn’t the most practical idea. She also didn’t see why they hadn’t just used a travel token or something like that to get there.

She turned to Raven, “Why are we driving there? Doesn’t this leave us open for attack, like before?”

Raven nodded, “It does make us slightly more vulnerable, though we spelled the cars to be untraceable and protected from impact. But the main reason we are driving is to preserve our energy. Traveling with this many people is extremely difficult and taxing. It would have taken all of us witches to get us there, and then we would be close to useless.”

Kenzie nodded in understanding, “That makes sense. Though, I still don’t understand the whole energy zap thing with spells. You gave us a few to try. If I used a plant to focus the energy, I was fine. But even when I didn’t, I just ended up being really hungry.”

Raven smiled, “You must be careful with using spells. Small spells like the ones I gave you, will only take a little energy from you. Kind of like you did an intense workout. Slightly stronger spells will make you tired to the point where you may need a nap. Large spells, without a conduit or energy source, can drain you completely. You will pass out sometimes for hours or even days. There are even a very few spells that take so much energy, you can die. So, when doing spells always try to use an alternate energy source, like I showed you.”

“What are energy sources other than plants?” She asked, intrigued.

“You can use the sun or the moon, they both give off natural energy. Obviously, they won’t wither like a plant, but they are harder to draw on and control. The best way is having a talisman that you store energy in like a container. Kind of like the bracelets I made you, but with energy magic rather than protective magic. You just have to charge them regularly.”

Kenzie nodded, following along with the logic of it, “How do you create energy magic?”

“You must do an elemental circle and call the energy to you. I’ll show you at our next training session. And I’ll make you a list of other energy sources.”

Marshall turned in his seat so he could see them, “Can’t you also draw on other people?”

Raven nodded, “Yes, sparingly. For example, when we moved my house from the Netherlands to your backyard, I used a little of each of your energy. It wasn’t enough that you would have noticed though. And people are affected differently, depending on their species. Werewolves have an abundance of energy, so it’s easier. But humans tire much faster than any supernatural would. Witches buzz with energy so we can use that when we need to, but it drains quickly, depending on the spell.”

Kenzie was a little bit fascinated and couldn’t wait to try something bigger, “What about Vampires?”

“Vampires are weird.” Raven chuckled a little, “Don’t tell them I said that. So, if they have just eaten, or fed and are at top strength, their energy is equal to that of a werewolf. But if they haven’t eaten in a while, their energy is so low it’s almost non- existent.”

Marshall chuckled, “Well, they are called the living dead for a reason.”

“I thought they weren’t actually dead?” Kenzie gave Aiden a suspicious look, “Did you guys lie about that so I wouldn’t be freaked out by them?”

Aiden smiled and shook his head, “No, they aren’t dead. But when they are, shall we say, depleted, their heart rates are nearly undetectable. They are called the undead because they very easily can appear dead at those times.”

Kenzie shivered, “Yea okay, that’s a little freaky.”

Raven nodded, “More than a little. But that’s why using a vampire’s energy is rare unless there is no other option.”

“Huh. Well, I think I’m just going to avoid them at all costs. So far, the two I’ve met are quite unpleasant company.” Kenzie leaned back in her seat, “So, how much longer is this drive?”

Aiden poked her, “It’s only been twenty minutes. We still have about forty- five minutes.”

Raven sighed heavily, “Anyone want to play a road game?”

Kenzie looked out one of the windows, “There is nothing out here for miles. We are in the boonies. What kind of road game could we play?”

“Um... Charades?”

Marshall laughed, “No. How about some music instead? I finally found a station that works out here.”

“That sounds good.” Kenzie loved music and it would help her relax.

At least, she thought it would until banjos started blasting out of the radio. Marshall quickly slapped the power knob to turn the radio back off, “Or not.”
