Chris sighed and pointed to the glove compartment, “I’ve got some cd’s in there and an iPod with an aux cable.”

Marshall squinted at his dad, “Is it all ACDC and Metallica?”

Chris grinned, “There’s other stuff on there too.”

Marshall got the iPod out of the glove compartment and plugged it in, then pushed play.

Kenzie grinned as the song “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked”started playing. When Chris started singing along, she joined in. Soon the whole car was singing.

They spent the rest of the drive listening to classic rock, and slowly, she felt herself relax. She knew it wouldn’t last once they arrived, but even if it was just for a little while, it helped.

When they turned onto a gravel road, Kenzie opened her eyes.

She hadn’t been sleeping. She’d closed her eyes and sang along to the music in her head. It had always been her trick for clearing her mind, almost like meditation. She used it whenever she was stressed, and her nerves would calm right down.

Unfortunately, as she looked out the window to see the building they were approaching, her calm instantly flooded her body.

The building, a term she used loosely, was really a dilapidated old barn. The wood looked so rotted she was surprised it was still standing at all. It was the only structure in the huge empty field, surrounded by forest on three sides. In the dark, the building looked ominous.

There weren’t any people or vehicles that she could see.

There were six SUVs in their group, and each pulled to a stop in a row, almost like they were in a parking lot, and guards started to pour out of them. Then she watched as the guards scattered to do a perimeter search.

Aiden opened his door and climbed out, then reached back to take her hand, “You ready for this?”

“There’s no one here.”

Everyone from their SUV joined them except for Jordan, Gabriel, and Gage, who went to join the other guards. She watched them, curious about what they were looking for.

“No one is here yet because we are a little early. We wanted to be able to scout the area for any traps.” Aiden said as Marshall handed him a gun.

She gaped at her brother, “What is that for?”

He shrugged, “Always be prepared.”

“But why wouldn’t we just shift, or use our magic?”

“Shifting takes time that we may not have. We brought twenty guards with us, along with the council’s six. So, we have a total of thirty-five people, all trained in combat. Four vampires, five witches, twenty- six wolves, and both of us have magic as well. We have an arsenal of weapons. Half of the guards will shift, the other half will be armed.” Marshall scrubbed a hand down his face.

He glanced around, studying the area, “Hopefully it won’t be necessary. But I’m thinking, it will.”

Kenzie gave his arm a quick squeeze of reassurance, “We’ll be okay.”

He nodded, “Stay close to me and Aiden, no matter what.”

He didn’t have to worry about that. She may know how to fight now, but she knew she wasn’t an expert in fighting or magic. She felt no shame in admitting that to herself. She knew she could help, but only if there was no other option. She would not be responsible for someone getting hurt and would do her best to stay out of the way.

Suddenly there were voices in her head, each giving a report of the area they were scouting. So far, there was no movement.

Then a voice she didn’t recognize spoke,“Alpha, they are approaching from the South. Ten wolves with packs around their necks, clothes I’d guess.”

“Thank you, Carter.”

Chapter 29.

Aiden

They all turned to the South with anticipation, awaiting the arrival of the other wolves. Aiden couldn’t wait to get a look at the men who were responsible for so much pain.
