Aiden and Marshall were already at the fridge, grabbing a handful of sandwiches. Sorcha was standing a bit behind them, looking shy and out of place. She didn’t want to make her uncomfortable, so didn’t introduce her. She’d probably already met the couple anyway. Kenzie was the new one here, though it didn’t really feel that way.

Aiden turned to her, “What kind of sandwich do you like? She’s made everything so take your pick.”

“I’m not picky. I’ll take whatever is closest please.” She loved food. There were maybe two things she could think of that she didn’t like and that was anchovies and wax beans, but honestly, who actually liked either of those?

Once the guys were stocked up on sandwiches, they grabbed four waters and headed out to the porch. She said goodbye to the busy couple who waved them off and continued their preparations.

They sat at the first table they came to, and immediately started in on the sandwiches. She barely tasted it with how fast she ate.

When she was about halfway done, she looked up and noticed Aiden watching at her, “What? Do I have something on my face?”

He gave her a lopsided grin and shook his head, “No, you’re good. I just figured it was a good time to bring up the fact that you used magic to heal me earlier.”

Marshall and Sorcha stopped eating, surprise on their faces. She shrugged, “I don’t know how I did it if that’s what you’re getting at. Honestly, it felt like an instinct. I hated seeing you hurt and then I just knew how to make it better.”

She took another bite, after she finished chewing and no one had said anything, she asked, “Are you upset that I did it?”

Aiden gave her a surprised look and set his sandwich down, giving her his full attention, “No, I am not upset. I am so grateful and honored that you wanted to help me. I’m honestly just curious what else you can do, but I’m worried too.”

Marshall said, “I think I felt it. When you used magic. While I was chasing after the wolves, I felt this… I don’t know, maybe static, run over my skin. Like a buzz. And I knew it was from you.”

That was interesting. “So, somehow maybe our magic is connected to each other. Is that possible?” she asked.

Marshall shrugged one shoulder and took another bite, after finishing he said, “Honestly, I don’t have any idea. I never knew we had any to begin with, so anything is possible.”

Kenzie had more questions than ever, “Maybe we should try to find someone who could help.”

Marshall looked back up from his sandwich, “That’s actually a really good idea. I might know someone.”

For the first time since sitting down, Sorcha set down her barely eaten sandwich and quietly asked, “You mean like a witch or sorceress?”

Kenzie dropped her sandwich. What did she just say? She must have heard wrong, “I’m sorry, a what?”

Sorcha spoke a little louder, repeating herself, “A witch or sorceress. They would know about magic and how to use it.”

Kenzie didn’t know what to say. She knew they were werewolves, obviously. And logically they couldn’t be the only supernatural beings in the world. That would just be crazy right? But, hearing her say there are witches and sorceresses’ kind of blew her mind. What else was there?

“So…” She dragged the word out, trying to piece together her thoughts, “Witches are real? And sorceresses? Aren’t they the same thing? Wait, what else is there?”

She wanted to know everything. She was a werewolf which had just always been, but honestly this was all new territory. Her mom never told her of other creatures existing, but maybe she didn’t know. She was human after all, so it wasn’t really her world.

Aiden glanced at Marshall, “Mind if I explain?”

Marshall nodded, “Go for it.”

“Okay. So, witches are the practitioners of good magic. Their magic comes from the earthly elements, and there is a balance. Each witch specializes in one of the five elements. Air, water, fire, earth, and spirit. They tend to be healers, environmentalists, crusaders of a sort. They like to help people in whatever way they can. But when they use their magic, it saps their own energy. It depends on the magic for how much.” Aiden took a second to drink from his water bottle and finished the last bite of his sandwich.

She watched him chew impatiently. She was intrigued and wanted to know more.

Finally, he continued, “Now sorceresses are the opposite. Their magic is dark. The way I understand it, is that they were witches who basically sold their soul for more power. They can do just about anything they want, but slowly as they use more and more magic, their soul diminishes. They are left shells of their former selves. Eventually they lose all emotions and are left wanting only more power, while craving the need to feel. They know what they lost, but they can’t get it back. My dad told me once that he met a sorceress who had gone mad from the feeling of emptiness.”

She got the shivers, “Why would anyone choose that?”

Aiden shrugged, “Greed, I guess? I could never understand wanting that.”

“I can understand not wanting to feel helpless. Wanting the power so no one can ever hurt you or take advantage of you. I get that.” Sorcha barely whispered, but with their wolf hearing they could all hear her.

Before any of them could say anything in reply, she stood up, “Will you please excuse me?”
