She could understand that. It’s not like they could be put in prison or anything, so having people enforce laws and balance seemed like a good thing.“So, all these council members are going to be here in a few minutes?”

“No. Only the two werewolf members are coming.”

“Why only those two?”

Christopher sent the impression of a shrug over the link. “I would assume because it is a strictly werewolf matter. But they like to keep us guessing so we won’t know until they decide to tell us.”

She didn’t like not knowing what was going on, and this seemed important. She said to Christopher, “Thank you for telling me all of this.”

“Of course! You can always talk to me. Now, on another note. Marshall told me about the attack. I was planning to come check on you in a bit but since we are here, are you okay?”

She chuckled.Of course, Marshall told him.“I’m fine. Just really tired. I was about to take a nap before the party.”

A feeling of relief flowed through the link. “I’m so glad to hear you’re okay. Marshall said you were, but I wanted to know for myself. I will let you rest and see you this evening. Sleep well.”

She smiled, even though he couldn’t see it. “Thank you. I’ll see you later.”

Chapter 11.

Kenzie

Kenzie was woken up by the sound of knocking on her door. It also woke Fiona, who stood up slowly and did a big cat stretch that looked so good she was almost jealous. Then she ran off to do whatever cats do.

She thought about ignoring the door and rolling over and going back to sleep, but then the knocking started again. With a groan, she threw the blankets back and rolled out of bed and made her way to the door. When she pulled it open, Aiden was standing there, fist at the ready to knock again.

He had a nervous look on his face, like he wasn’t quite sure how he would be received. Good. She still wasn’t happy with him, but honestly, didn’t know why. She had only known him for a few days, of course he had a past before she’d come along. She knew it was irrational to be upset but couldn’t really help it.

She turned to the side and motioned for him to come in. As soon as he stepped in, he turned to face her, “I am so sorry! She ambushed me and I didn’t even see her coming. I swear she doesn’t mean anything to me. Honestly, she’s a thorn in my side most of the time. I have told her repeatedly that I am not interested. It was over a year ago and nothing has happened since and won’t.” He paused, waiting for her to say something.

She slowly closed the door, then walked to the kitchen to make some coffee. She was trying to think of what to say. Now that he was here, she was enjoying seeing him sweat just a little bit, but she also believed him.

Once the coffee maker started brewing, she turned back to see Aiden hadn’t moved.

Sighing she walked over to him, “It’s fine. You have a past, so do I. I didn’t react well, but I’m over it now.”

When she finished speaking, he looked a little suspicious, “That’s it? You’re just over it?”

She snorted out a laugh, “Yes, I’m over it. We aren’t together. I have no claim on you. And I can’t be mad about something you did before you knew me.”

“That’s very mature, but also wrong. Maybe not for you, but for me, the moment I met you that was it. You can say we’re not together, but to me, I am yours. There will be no other for me. I am officially off the market.” He looked a little smug when he said that, then he gave her a little crooked smirk.

She realized it really was just that simple for him. But for her, she had all kinds of thoughts running through her head. Like the fact that her mom wasn’t here and would never get to meet him. Or the fact that she barely knew anything about this world, and apparently, about herself. She also didn’t know anything about him either. So much had happened in such a small amount of time. She just needed some time to adjust.

She looked at his beautiful face and knew he would understand, “I just need to take this slow, okay?”

He nodded with a small smile, “I know. I’m not going to rush you. How about we start with being friends?”

“I would like that.” She could be friends. Aside from the insane attraction that she felt for him every time he stepped in the room, or the fact that she’d pictured him naked several times in her head. When they shifted earlier, not looking at him was so difficult it was almost painful.

Aiden cleared his throat, bringing her out of her daydreaming, “Alright, now that we are all good, are you ready to go?”

Ah right, she’d forgotten about the party, “Just give me a few minutes.”

She went back into her room and quickly changed into some jean shorts and a lavender peasant blouse, with a pair of light grey flats. She brushed the tangles from her hair, then checked herself in the mirror. What little makeup she’d put on this morning was long gone, but she wasn’t in the mood for it anyway.

When she walked back into the living room Aiden was leaning a hip against the counter, a cup in his hand. He had helped himself to the coffee and a second cup was sitting on the counter next to him. She picked up the mug and took a sip.

It was amazing! “What did you put in this?” She asked.
