She placed her hands over top of his, just to touch him. It was soothing and calmed the storm that was raging in her head. “I’m okay. I was just getting a little dizzy, but it’s getting better. I’m sorry.”

Marshall said, “There’s no reason to be sorry. I’m even starting to get a headache from all the activity.”

Kenzie took a closer look at Marshall. He had lines of strain around his eyes like he was in pain. She pulled away from Aiden’s hands and placed her fingers on Marshall’s temples.

Then she took a deep breath and tried to concentrate.

She didn’t really know how to do it, but with Aiden it had been instinct so she was hoping it would work the same way. She closed her eyes and thought about Marshall and how happy she was to have met him. Slowly, her hands started to warm, and she could almost see his headache start to fade.

She kept her eyes closed until she was sure every bit of pain was gone.

Then two hands gently took hers, pulling them away from Marshall’s face. When she opened her eyes, Marshall was holding her hands.

“Little sister, you are amazing. Thank you so much.” Then he pulled her into a tight hug, “You are truly a gift.”

She hugged him back just as fiercely, “I’m just glad I could help. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do it again.”

“I don’t have any doubt that you can do anything you set your mind to.” Pulling back, Marshall said, “Alright, let’s go listen to some music and roast some marshmallows.”

Aiden was still standing next to them, but it looked like everyone else had trailed off to do their own thing now that the party was amping up. The music was playing loudly, and people had started dancing. There was a huge fire blazing now, which people were using to make smores and a couple people were using it to light fireworks.

Aiden took her hand, “Come on sweetheart, let’s dance.”

She thought she wouldn’t want to, but now was looking forward to it. She kept her mind as firmly closed as she could and followed him to the dance area. There was a fast-paced country song playing that she didn’t know, but it had a fun beat.

Aiden spun her into his arms like a pro and her body followed his direction. With her hand in his and his other hand on her lower back, he guided her in a quick two-step. They moved so well together it surprised her. She really thought she would be tripping all over herself or stepping on his toes, but they almost glided together.

She knew it was only because she was dancing with him. It was like they fit together perfectly.

When the song changed to a slow one, they stayed on the dance floor but switched to a slow sway. They were closer together now and her body was buzzing with the feeling of his skin on hers. She could feel his breath on her cheek and his hands around her waist, searing through the fabric of her shirt.

She kept her gaze focused on his chest for self-preservation but could feel his gaze on her. Even though she was trying to keep her mind closed, she could feel bits of his emotions trickling through. The strength of them was shocking.

She knew he wanted her physically but hadn’t realized he already cared about her. Could someone develop those kinds of feelings that fast? It didn’t seem like it could be real, but she was feeling it too. She didn’t put a name to it yet, she just wanted to relax and enjoy it.

So, she did.

Looking up into his eyes, it was like drowning in an ocean. She could see all his emotions laid out for her, like an open book. He wasn’t hiding anything.

In that moment, she no longer cared about it being too soon or about taking things slow. In this moment, in this bubble of peace, all she wanted to do was kiss him.

She decided to go for it and stood on her toes, with her hands on his broad shoulders, then leaned in and pressed her lips to his. Gently at first, like she was testing the waters.

It was like magic. He pressed his lips a little harder against hers and wrapped his arms tighter around her waist, pulling her into his chest.

Kenzie pulled back just enough so she could look into his eyes again. He had an unreadable emotion on his face. A little unsure now, she asked, “Was that okay?”

A low growl issued from him before he pulled her closer again, “You can kiss me anytime you want Kenz. In fact, I insist you do it every time you want to.”

Then he smirked. She chuckled and leaned back in to kiss him again and wrapped her arms around his neck to pull him closer. This time she deepened the kiss, opening for him.

He ran the tip of his tongue over her lip before taking full control and thrusting his tongue into her mouth. He tasted sweet like strawberries from eating the tarts.

It was the best kiss she’d ever had. She moaned slightly as his tongue tangled with hers, sending fireworks shooting over her whole body. Then there was a tingling sensation over her skin, and suddenly she was thinking of Marshall.

Someone shouted, breaking the moment.

They pulled apart quickly and glanced around for the source of the commotion.
