Aiden stayed on the floor where he landed, “Hm, this carpet is pretty nice. I could totally take a nap here.”

“You’re so weird.” Kenzie threw a pillow at Aiden’s face, which he caught with a smile, “Both of you get out so I can get dressed.”

Marshall started walking toward the door to leave, “I’ll get Dad and we’ll meet you in my office when you’re ready.”

Aiden jumped up and planted a light kiss on her cheek, “See you in a few babe.”

They both left, leaving the room quiet, and suddenly she felt very lonely. She’d never spent a whole lot of time with so many people before. She usually preferred quiet solitude where she could read a book and not be bothered by any kind of noise.

The pack was definitely not quiet. There was always something going on. Whether it was the morning training sessions that seemed like half the pack showed up for, or the bustle in the kitchen from a meal being served, or people coming and going to talk with Marshall.

There was always a cacophony of sounds, and she was starting to love it. But after the night she’d had, after the horrible dreams, all she wanted was to sit with her mom and talk. She’d always been able to make Kenzie feel better.

Just as she was about to get up, Fiona jumped on the bed and bounded across the mattress to her. She immediately started rubbing all over Kenzie and butting her under the chin with her head. Kenzie picked her up and held her close as she scratched behind the cat’s ears. She was such a sweet kitty, always happy for a cuddle. She started purring loudly as she tucked in closer to Kenzie’s chest.

Well, she could wait a few more minutes before getting up. She leaned back against her pillows and got comfortable with Fiona. It was peaceful, just sitting there, doing nothing but petting the cat. It relaxed her, chasing away the last remnants of her nightmares.

Kenzie

She’d spent longer with Fiona than she probably should have, but it made her feel better and that’s all she really cared about at the moment.

Now she was standing in Marshall’s office, a good half hour after the guys left her room. Marshall was on the phone with someone, so Aiden and Chris were sitting on the couches, waiting for him to finish his conversation.

Just as she was about to sit with them, the door behind her opened again and in walked Raven and Sorcha.

Raven walked over to her and slung her arm around Kenzie’s shoulders, “So, we were summoned?”

Kenzie nodded, “Yea, we had another visit from Rhiannon. A whole bunch of nonsense that we are going to have to somehow decipher what she meant.”

Raven sighed, “Great. More questions without answers.”

Sorcha stepped closer to them, almost whispering, “The council members have been slinking around, asking a bunch of questions about the pack, about Dimitri and anyone who came from Black Falls or Blood Moon.”

“Have they spoken to you?” Kenzie asked.

Sorcha shook her head, “No. I don’t know if they know about me. I never told anyone where I came from until that day in the clearing when I told Marshall. I know there are a few people here that left Black Falls, but I doubt any of them would say anything. We learned very quickly to keep things to ourselves.”

Kenzie took her hand to offer a little comfort, “That couldn’t have been easy. I can’t imagine being alone in that kind of situation and what you all have been through. You were so strong to get away.”

Sorcha squeezed her hand and shrugged, “I wasn’t strong. I let it go on and on. I only escaped because I had help. But now, I am determined to never let that kind of thing happen again. Now I’m going to be strong. But that doesn’t mean I want the council to start bombarding me with questions. I’m not going to air my dirty laundry to them.”

“You won’t have to. Marshall will protect you and so will the rest of us. I know I’m not part of your pack, but you’re my friend. And I protect my friends.” Raven gently dropped her other arm around Sorcha, connecting them.

Kenzie nodded, “Exactly what she said. You’re ours, and we protect our own. I may be new, but this is already becoming my home and my family, and you are a big part of that.”

Marshall hung up the phone and turned to face them, his eyes landing right on Sorcha, “I know you probably didn’t want me to hear you, but I did. And I’m not sorry, because Raven and Kenzie are right. You don’t have to worry about the council. They won’t bother you. I hadn’t realized they were bothering my people, so that will be handled.”

He waved his phone in the air, “That was Darius.” She didn’t know who that was, and Marshall seemed to realize that and explained, “The Alpha of Blue Ridge pack in Georgia and our closest ally. I’ve sent out word to all the alphas we are allied with about what’s been going on, kind of a heads up especially with the wards being passed.”

Kenzie still didn’t know a lot about the wards so asked, “If there are wards to keep out non pack members, how was I able to pass through when I got here?”

Aiden answered, “Jordan walked you in. It’s why he stayed next to your car. He had to allow you through.”

“Oh, well okay.” She still didn’t understand the concept of wards but figured that wasn’t important right now.

Raven whispered in her ear, “I’ll explain later.”

Kenzie gave her an appreciative smile then focused on what Marshall was saying.
