Kenzie stepped up to Marshall and placed a hand on his shoulder, “Marshall, you can’t stop her. It’s just a scratch. I know you want to protect her, but part of that is letting her learn to protect herself. You might not always be there.”

Silently to him she added,“You saw the scars, Marshall. She has been vulnerable her whole life. You have to let her gain her own power. She needs this control of her own life. If you take it away, she will never trust you.”

Marshall cursed under his breath as he released Sorcha’s hands and paced a few steps before coming back, “Okay fine. I get you need this. I hate seeing you hurt though, it tears me up.”

Sorcha’s face softened and she hesitantly placed a hand on his chest, “I’m sorry. I promise I will be more careful, though I can’t promise it won’t happen again. But I’m getting better, faster, and that helps. And Cassie would never really hurt either of us. I know you trust her. So please, trust me to know that I can do this.”

Marshall covered her hand with one of his, “Okay. I do trust both of you.” Marshall wrapped his arm around Kenzie’s shoulder and placed a kiss on her forehead, “All of you. Just move a little quicker next time, please? I don’t think my heart can take you two being seriously hurt.”

Kenzie smiled and nodded, “We’ll do our best.”

Sorcha also agreed, and Marshall released them both. He nudged Sorcha toward the fence, “Raven’s almost here. Run along darlin. I’ll find you later.”

She smiled then rushed off, a little bounce in her step. Kenzie was thrilled she was going to start working. It would keep her busy and hopefully get her more used to being around other people.

Sorcha had come out of her shell a bit around their small group of friends, but with anyone else, she still clammed up. A job could help build confidence and give her a purpose, so hopefully it would be a good fit for her.

Kenzie snapped her focus back to her surroundings just as Raven and Sabine reached them. Thankfully, the others stayed by the fence to observe.

Chapter 21.

Kenzie

Kenzie was standing next to Marshall, listening to Raven instruct them on the plans for training today. Or rather, partially listening. She was a bit distracted by Raven’s new look.

Apparently, Raven was in a dark mood because she had foregone her usual bright colors and was dressed in all black. Even her newly dyed cotton candy colored hair was now black.

She had on a short sleeved black shirt that laced down the front, skintight black leather pants that laced up the sides, and knee-high black leather platform boots with inch long spikes on the toes. She was also wearing black eyeshadow and lipstick, and a black spiked collar and wrist bands.

With the scowl on her face and the way she was stomping across the grass, Kenzie knew she was mad about something and figured it was the council. They had a way of pissing off even the nicest person.

Yesterday, Arabella insulted Marilyn’s cooking and Antonio almost threw a pot of boiling stew at her.

Kenzie had unfortunately missed the altercation, but Jordan had told the tale in exquisite detail. Antonio was one of the sweetest and most cheerful people she’d ever met, so making him that mad was difficult.

She would have to ask Raven about all the black later though. From what she’d heard, Sabine would be taking the lead on their training today. Kenzie tuned back in just as Raven was explaining why.

“Sabine is an Earth witch, so she is better equipped to train you in that element. But we are actually going to try all of the elements today to see what you can do. Then, when we are done with that, we’re going to see how far apart you can be and still have your powers work.”

Kenzie raised her hand, “How are we going to do that? Just go for a drive in opposite directions or something?”

Raven nodded, “Kind of. I think we will have Marshall stay here and you drive toward town, or through it, until you can no longer access your magic. Keeping one of you stationary will make it easier. We can have Aiden go with you if you want.”

“Okay, sounds good.”

Sabine sighed, “Alright, if you’re ready, shall we begin?”

Marshall motioned for her to start, “By all means. Instruct us.”

Kenzie snorted, trying not to laugh at his sarcasm.

Sabine definitely noticed and glared at him for a moment before turning away. She walked about fifteen feet away, then turned back to face them with her hands stretched out from her body toward the ground.

Suddenly the ground under their feet started to move, to rumble.

Kenzie watched as the ground started to shake and roll toward them, as it got closer it sped up, faster and faster. She started to back up as it got even closer.

She thought Sabine would stop but she didn’t. Kenzie jumped toward the right to get out of the way but then the ground split open right where she was going to land.
