Marshalls arms wrapped around her just in time and wrenched her away from the rolling ground and the open gap.

When they were both on safe ground, he turned to Sabine and snapped, “Enough!”

Sabine rolled the ground one last time before she smiled, then she flicked her hand through the air and the ground settled. With another wave, the crevice in the ground repaired itself.

“Don’t get testy Alpha, I’m just having a little fun.” She chuckled, “Should have seen your faces. Now, if you are done making sarcastic comments, lift those rocks.”

She motioned toward a couple of fist sized rocks sitting near the fence. “Marshall, you go first. Make them float.”

“Uh yea, sure.” Marshall stood about ten feet from the rocks. “So, how do I do that exactly?”

“Well, apparently your magic works by instinct, so use them. The same way you change into a wolf and the same way you use fire. So, just think about what you want to do, and do it.” Sabine sounded annoyed that she had to explain.

“That was super helpful.”Kenzie was starting to think the witch council members were not really there to help as much as to keep an eye on them. They had not actually offered any advice or incredibly helpful comments. Colin had enjoyed suffocating her and hadn’t stepped in to help since. Now all Sabine said was to just do it.

Marshall gave her a little smirk,“Right. Well, let’s show her what we’ve got.”

“You could throw the rocks at her. That would definitely give her a taste. Maybe knock her down a peg or two.”

Marshall chuckled,“It would be fun to see her face. But probably not worth it in the long run.”

Sabine sighed, “Sometime today, Alpha.”

Kenzie nudged her brother,“You’re probably right. Better get to it then.”

Marshall shook himself, like he was shaking off the tension, then focused his gaze on the pile of rocks.

After a moment, he smiled and held his hand out as one of the rocks slowly lifted then twirled in the air and floated into his palm.

He admired the stone for a second, then tossed it into the air. She thought he was going to catch it, but instead he kept it floating in front of him. Then he threw out both hands towards the remaining rocks and started circling his fingers through the air. As he did, each rock rose to float with the first one.

He dangled them in the air, then started rotating them as if he were juggling but without his hands. It was a fun little dance that he continued for a few minutes, before dropping the rocks back into their place by the fence.

Then he turned toward Sabine and dropped into a quick bow. Kenzie chuckled and started clapping along with Raven.

Sabine gave them a stern look, “Stop that. Tell me what you learned.”

Marshall sighed, “I learned that it had nothing to do with earth magic. It actually took using wind to lift the rocks. I didn’t think about it at first, until the first rock was floating.”

Sabine actually looked impressed, “Alright good. Miss Lord, your turn. I want you to bury the rocks in the ground.”

Kenzie didn’t reply, she turned back to the rocks and studied them for a moment. Without thinking, she held her hand out and scooped the air as if she were digging a hole. She didn’t think the hand motions were necessary, but it seemed more natural than just standing there.

As she moved her hand, the dirt next to the rocks moved as if someone was digging into it with a shovel. She did it a few more times to make the hole bigger, then rolled the rocks right into the hole and covered them with the dirt.

She knew she had used both wind and earth to dig the hole and then move the rocks. She figured that had been Sabine’s plan. If they didn’t think too much about what they were trying to do, it was easier. So, maybe she’d been wrong, and the witch really was trying to help them.

She dusted her hands off as if she needed to brush dirt off of them and turned to Sabine, “That was surprisingly easy. And took both earth and wind.”

“Good.” With that one comment, Sabine turned back to Marshall. “Now dig them up and put them back where they belong.”

They spent the next hour doing similar tasks. As soon as they finished one, Sabine issued another demand. She ran them through all the elements except spirit, over and over. They did it so many times that they no longer hesitated at each command.

They were all small tasks, but each tested their control and instincts on which element to use. Kenzie burned a few plants when she first tried fire, but then Marshall put it out with a splash of water. Marshall accidentally ripped some wildflowers out of the ground with wind and Kenzie re-planted them with earth.

So, in a way, they were also learning how to work together as a team and to rely on each other. By the time Sabine called a halt, they were both a little worn out. It was like they had just run a full marathon and now they needed to catch their breath.

Kenzie started to sit when Sabine stepped close to her, no more than a foot between them, “We are not done yet. There is still one more element.”
