Chris shifted on his feet like he was nervous and focused on Kenzie, “I wanted to see if I could take you instead of Aiden? And maybe when we’re done, we could get lunch in town, if you want. And Marshall could meet us. I thought it would be nice to spend some time together, just the three of us.”

Marshall opened his eyes to look at her, waiting for her answer.

She smiled, thrilled by the idea, “I would love that.”

“Have you been to the bistro yet?” asked Marshall.

“Yes, Aiden took me the other day. It was amazing! The decor is mind blowing. I plan to convince Cassie to let me photograph it at some point.”

“That’s a fantastic idea. I’m sure Cassie would be happy to let you take pictures. Marshall did an amazing job on the interior.” Pride poured from Chris’ voice as he spoke about his son.

Kenzie nudged Marshall, “I had no idea you did the work. It is gorgeous. You and Aiden are both geniuses with design.”

Marshall beamed, “Thank you. Artistic talent seems to run in the family.”

Raven made a gagging sound, “Gross. While you guys get all mushy, I’m gonna go find some food. If you are up for it, you two should head out now so you can get it done. I think you should stay connected by phone, so you know as soon as your magic drops out.”

Kenzie got to her feet and poked her brother with her foot, “Come on lazy bones, I’m hungry. The sooner we do this, the faster we can eat.”

“Okay fine. You guys head out, and I’ll let Aiden know he’s not taking you. My phone is on my desk so give me a minute and I’ll call you.” He started to head toward the house but then turned back, “By the way, I told the council to get lost. At least the witches and vampires. Though, I’m hoping Will and Corine go too. Less eyes looking over our shoulders, even if they are on our side.”

Chris nodded, “Good, they were becoming a nuisance. I’ve never had so many people call complaining before.”

“Ah right, sorry about that. This morning was the first I heard of it.” Marshall had a guilty look on his face.

Chris patted his shoulder, “No big deal. I heard about it a few days ago and handled it. I figured you had enough on your plate.”

Marshall smiled, “Thanks dad. Alright well, you guys head out.”

“Okay, see you in a bit.” Chris said then motioned for Kenzie to follow him.

Kenzie waved to Raven and Marshall, then followed Chris to the garage on the side of the house.

He walked up to the most beautiful car Kenzie had ever seen. It was a classic matte black Dodge Charger, fully blacked out with window tint, black rims and trim. She ran her hand over the trunk, just to touch it.

“This is incredible! What year?” Her uncle loved cars. He would lose his mind if he ever saw it. She would have to send him a picture later.

“Thanks!” Chris smiled and patted the hood, “This is my baby. She’s a 1968 R/T. Me and my dad rebuilt her the year before I married your mother.”

“Well, you did an incredible job.” She gave him a sly smile, “So, you’re going to let me drive right?”

He chuckled, “Not a chance, but good try.”

“Ah well, I can’t drive a manual, so that’s probably a good idea.” He just shook his head with a smile and opened the passenger door for her.

“We might have to change that. Everyone should know how to drive a manual.” He chuckled, “You do know how to change a tire, right?”

As she got into the car she poked him in the shoulder, “I am not helpless! I can change a tire and my oil if I have too. Maybe even the breaks if I’m really in a bind. So, I know just enough.”

“Well, that’s something at least.” He smiled as he closed her door and crossed to the driver’s side.

As they drove off pack lands, passed the front gate, Kenzie wondered about the wards they had told her about. She tried to look around, to see them but didn’t notice anything.

So, she asked, “Should I be able to see or feel the wards when we pass them?”

Chris shook his head, “No. You’re pack so you shouldn’t notice them at all. A wolf or other magical being who tried to pass would basically walk into an invisible wall. If they mean us harm, they get a nice shock. Now if a human gets close to the barrier, they feel a deep need to turn around and go the other way.”

Kenzie thought about that for a moment, “But, what if they keep going anyway?”
