He leaned in close, his breath warm on my ear. "You never told me you were an accomplished pianist."

I shivered at the husky timbre of his voice and gave in to the urge to lean into him. "We have so much to learn about each other." We kissed until we were both breathless, and then I pulled away, nodding toward Rachel. "Let's go get some coffee and breakfast."

"Yeah," he replied, scowling. "Sorry I forgot to warn you first. I recommended we hire a female for you…."

As we started for the kitchen, I waved my hand in the air. "I'm getting used to your surprises."

"I can't believe how well-stocked the pantry is. I figured it would be empty since you were gone for so long."

Guy held up his phone. "I gave the staff a list before we left London… and from the looks of it, they added a few items."

As I pulled out the ingredients for pancakes, Guy opened the fridge. "I'll get the milk, and the eggs and the veggies, and the blueberries…." He started laughing.

"You do the omelets. I'll do the blueberry pancakes!" I suggested.

"Deal!"

After breakfast, we decided to go for a walk so Guy could show me around the property and led me toward the barn. "I've never been in here," Guy admitted.

"What! You never went exploring?"

He grabbed my hand and looked around suspiciously. "It's rumored an Arab prince built this place to hide from his family."

"Oh, God. What a great storyline for my next novel," I said, laughing as he pulled open the barn door. The barn was huge and had a lingering smell of hay and horses. There were stables along one wall and a tack room along the other. In the center was a large open area for training.

"This is amazing," I said, my voice full of awe. "Did you know Meagan and I took riding lessons together as kids?"

Guy's eyes lit up. "Meagan never mentioned that."

"Guy, we need to go see her. I want to see her. I miss my friend, and it's time for healing between us. I mean, the poor girl was kidnapped and seriously injured."

"You are not only an accomplished pianist and equestrian but also a mind reader."

I plopped down on a bale of hay. "What?"

"We haven't really had a chance to talk privately yet about this. But I need to go see how my sister is doing. In the last report from a week ago, Meagan was finishing her therapy and should be released soon."

I nodded and cut to the chase. "She can't go back to her place. So what do you think about her moving in here? At least until...."

Guy pulled out his phone. "Is it cool with you if I call my sister to check if she's okay with us dropping by this afternoon?"

"Of course. I'd love to see her... surely by now, she is over us dating."

"I think she let go of that issue a long time ago," Guy said, scrolling through his contacts.

It was early evening when we arrived at the La Jolla Rehab Center, and my heart was racing. I had texted Meagan a few times since her kidnapping but hadn't called, so I wasn't sure how this meeting would go. But I knew there was no way to avoid it, and I didn't want to. I loved and missed my friend and just wanted our relationship to return to normal.

Meagan held out her arms to me and squeezed me tight. "I've missed you so much," she whispered to me.

"Meagan." I breathed her name, realizing how much I had missed her. I stepped back and cupped her face before I could stop myself, shocked by how different she looked. Short hair framed her delicate features unknown to me — too thin, eyes sunken in...

"Oh, my gosh. I'm so sorry." I pulled her back into a hug, not wanting to let go. "I can't believe what all you've been through."

"It's been hard," she said, her voice muffled against my shoulder. "Really hard."

I leaned back and looked at Guy, who made no effort to cover the tear running down his cheek. "Sis, you look much better than you did at first."

Meagan laughed, "You mean when I had that white bandage wrapped around my head..."
