I crashed through the people, seeing Daniel raced up next to me and straight past, his legs taking full strides as he chased after them. They pulled away from me and down the block, making a right with Daniel right behind. I slowed my pace and grabbed my phone from my back pocket, frantically dialing.

“Hello? Yes. I need…oh god. I need to report a kidnapping. A man, he took my daughter!”

Daniel

My legs burned but it only made me push harder as I raced toward them. I could see Harper’s wild blonde hair blowing wildly all around her. I turned the corner and raced down the back street between the buildings, my eyes growing wide as he made a sharp turn into a fenced yard. I slowed my pace as I approached, knowing that I needed to show caution.

Very slowly I clicked the gate handle and threw it open, my fists up and ready. As I stepped into the yard, I found the person setting Harper down in a small sandbox and then waved their finger back and forth at her before turning to me. We stood staring at each other for several moments.

“Just let her go. I don’t know who you are, but you can’t just snatch children off the street.”

Harper whimpered from behind him and my eyes darted to her. “It’s okay sweetie. I’m here. Just stay right there, okay?”

I took a step forward, my arms out when suddenly the masked kidnapper raced toward me, shoulder down. Before I could react, they plowed right into me, both of us falling hard to the ground. I grabbed at them, trying to get their mask off as they gripped my shirt and rolled me over beneath them. We tossed each other around, back and forth, yanking and pulling at each other. They flipped me on my back and reared back, punching me hard in the side of the head. Grabbing my hair, they slammed my head to the ground, sending stars into my vision.

Looking up through blurry vision, they tilted their head to the side and back again before leaning down next to my ear and whispering. “Surf’s up.”

I tried to move but my head was spinning. They stood up and kicked me in the side before racing off out of the yard.

“Danny?” Harper whimpered, her little hands on my arm as she sat down on the ground next to me. “I want my mommy.”

I blinked hard, pulling myself together and slowly sat up. Immediately I reached for her and pulled her into my arms. “I know munchkin. Come on. Wrap your arms around my neck and I’ll take you to her. You’re safe, okay?”

She clamped onto me and I stood up, holding onto the fence for a second to catch my balance before wrapping my arms around her. As we stepped back into the back street, Sicily called out. “Oh my God! Harper, baby.”

She ran up and I handed Harper over, rubbing my hand over her hair. “She’s okay. They didn’t hurt her.”

Sicily hugged Harper tightly and looked at me, her face changing back to concern from relief. “You’re bleeding. What happened?”

Just then a police siren wailed behind us and two cop cars pulled up.

I had never been the hero. But when I saw that little girl being raced off, something came over me I had never felt before. I would have killed that masked kidnapper if I had to. I knew it, without a doubt. As I watched Sicily standing there talking to the police, I knew I was in it far more than just an infatuation or heavy crush. I would do anything to protect either one of them. It didn’t matter how far I had to go.

Chapter Seventeen

Sicily

I carried Harper close to me, not wanting to put her down, even in her own bed. But I knew she needed some rest, and she needed to feel safe in her home. She didn’t really understand what happened, and though I would probably seek a child therapist for her in the coming weeks, for the time being we downplayed it for her little mind, making her think the person who took her was confused. They mistook her for their own little girl. Luckily, she was so tired and out of it she didn’t even ask why they had then attacked Daniel.

As I covered Harper up, tears rolled down my cheeks. I couldn’t imagine losing her like that, or at all for that matter. No matter my plans or aspirations, Harper was the most important thing in my entire life. She was my glue, she was my purpose and she was the greatest gift that Daniel never knew he gave me.

Daniel.

If it weren’t for him…

I couldn’t even think about the what ifs. I had no idea what that person wanted with Harper and the prospects were far too chilling to even begin inviting into my head. What was important was that she was home, safe, and with me. That was all that mattered. I covered her up and kissed her head one last time, slipping bunny into her arms.

Closing the door until it was barely cracked, I crossed my arms over my chest and walked out into the living room. I stopped for a moment at the end of the hall and stared at Daniel, sitting on the couch, his head back, a bandage on the side of his head, and his eyes closed. I watched him sitting there in the dim light of the room, looking so perfectly right in my home. He was my hero, my love interest, and everything that made me feel so safe.

I slipped my sandals off and walked over, reaching down and taking his hand. He jolted awake, blinking at me for several seconds. I didn’t say a word, and instead, helped him up and pulled him down the hallway to my bedroom. I closed my door and stood in front of him in the light of the moon cascading through the window. Carefully I reached out and pulled his shirt up, pausing as he flinched, lifting his arms. I tossed it gently to the side and leaned forward, carefully pressing my lips to his hot skin. I moved over his shoulder, across his chest and then up his neck. With each kiss I unlaced the front of his board shorts.

With a slight tug, they fell to the ground. He looked at me with deep eyes, watching as I stepped back, keeping my eyes locked with his. I pulled my shirt over my head and undid the button and zipper to my shorts. Sensually I slid them down my legs and stepped out of them. Still eye locked, I reached back and unclasped my bra, sliding the straps down my arms and allowing my breasts to fall free.

I reached forward and took his hand, cupping my breast with it as I moved in, kissing his lips. Moving slowly he pulled me into him, wrapping his mouth over mine. My goal was to treat him, to be there for him, but he was so inviting, and way it made me feel to surrender my body to him flipped the heat of the moment completely. He wrapped his arm around my waist and lifted me up on his non hurt side, turning me and carrying me to the bed. As he laid me down, I scooted back in the bed, taking my panties off and sitting with my arm out, reaching for him.

He walked up next to the bed and pulled the covers back, getting beneath them as I scooted beneath them as well. He turned toward me, rolling into me, immediately our mouths passionately pressed together. He laid on top of me, one hand combing through my hair as we kissed, his tongue swiping across mine, our legs intertwined with one another. There was heat, there was always heat between us, but this was so much different. There was passion, caring, emotion behind every beat of his heart against my chest.

His hands moved softer and more personal against my skin as we rolled across the bed, his lips sinking down my neck. As he kissed my skin his hand moved up and over my thigh, parting them. He tucked between them as I pulled them up his sides, feeling his hard cock slowly slide inside of me. I gasped in pleasure, feeling his lips against my neck as he rolled his hips into me, penetrating me to my core.
