“Apparently you have to run up the mountain tethered to another human while holding a mug of coffee,” Nash said. “Winner with the fullest mug gets a prize.”

“This town is like a micro climate of weird,” Ford said.

“And then some. Let’s go.”

“I want food after.”

“Done. You follow me.”

“I know where the school is, Nash.”

His brother muttered something unflattering about his directional skills and climbed into his pickup. Ford followed him down Main Street and then on to the school, and like everywhere here, it didn’t take more than a few minutes.

He followed Nash’s pickup as he drove it across the school grounds to deposit the stuff near where there appeared to be a lot of people working. He saw the Trainers and Fin, and Maggie was there with Piper Howard.

“Hello, Ford.”

“Hey, Mr. Goldhirsh, how you doing?”

He stopped as the man reached him. It looked like he’d fit in a few miles before coming. Ford and Nash were in shape. Had to be in their business, but this guy was next level. His lean frame was in running clothes. On his head he wore a blue cap with the wordsLondon Marathon.

“You run that?” Ford pointed.

“I have. Do you run?”

“It’s inevitable some days.”

“It’s good for mind clarity, and it improves sleeping. That and meditating.”

He couldn’t know because Ford had told no one what went on inside his head sometimes or the lack of sleep, but he still stiffened.

“I’d like you to come meditate with us. It’s important to clear the mind of things that stop us from moving forward.”

“Uh… I’m all good.”

“Everyone needs a little fine-tuning. Animals also help with that.”

Mr. Goldhirsh had a gentle smile on his face. While Ford was outwardly calm, he was feeling anything but on the inside. He couldnotknow.

“I’m surrounded by them,” he managed to get out.

“A dog, I’m talking about. A constant companion. It would be good for you to have one of those.”

“Right. No, I don’t have a dog of my own, but my parents do.”

“Well now, I’m sure that’s about to change soon. Come on, Ford. We have work to do.”

“Why did you say that to me?”

“Which part?” Mr. Goldhirsh was still smiling that gentle smile.

“The part about clarity of mind and moving forward. All of it really.”

“Because the eyes, Ford, are the window to our souls.”

That left him none the wiser, but as the man was walking away, he had to follow. Never mind the fact that what he wanted to do was run the other way, fast.

“Talking is a big part of growth,” Mr. Goldhirsh continued. “Talking and not holding things inside helps us move forward.”
