“So, Ford, are you any good at volleyball?” Jack said from down the end of the counter.

“Why?”

“Nixon and the sheriff of Lyntacky, who is a friend of his, are doing a fundraising event for the families in that town who need financial support. Part of the gala day will be the volleyball competition.”

“I thought you played basketball? In fact, I know you do because we beat you last week.”

The SRR and Ryker Falls boys went at each other on the court often, and it was pretty even as to who had the most wins, but last time they’d come out on top.

“Sure, and we are way better than you,” Jack said. “But we let you win occasionally so you don’t cry.”

“Now we know that for a lie.”

Autumn giggled, and the sound was cute. Not that he thought it any cuter than, say, Maggie’s or a child’s, but still cute.

“Mayor Gripper is on board, and we’re sending two teams. A men’s and a women’s. We could do with you and Nash, loath as I am to admit it. You’re both tall.”

“Aww, now that’s real sweet of you, Jack. Saying you need us like that warms my heart.”

“Amusing. Are you in or out?”

“This town.” Ford shook his head. “Always organizing something. We’ll help. Just depends when and if I can get cover for the ranch.”

“I could play.”

Ford looked at Autumn after she spoke.

“No, scratch that,” she added.

“Why scratch that?”

“They probably have enough people, and they don’t know me or if I can play.”

“Can you?” he asked her.

She nodded.

“Well then, if you want to play, play.”

“I’ll put your name down,” Jack said.

“No way out now.” Ford glanced over as she sipped her coffee and winced. “Hot?”

She got off the stool without answering him. “I should get home and relieve the babysitter. Bye.”

“Bye,” both Ford and Jack said.

Ford watched her wave to Rory and Piper, who were talking, and then walk out the door.

“She’s nice,” Jack said. “And single.”

Ford ate the last mouthful of his cake.

“You’re single too, Ford.”

This time it was him who slugged back his coffee.

“You should ask her out.”
