“He’s probably right because yours look troubled. Is it your family? Is everything all right between you?”

“It is. Let me in and I’ll tell you.”

“I don’t think you want to come inside right now.”

“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t. It’s all right. I won’t scare your son.”

“I know that, even if he was here.”

“He’s not?”

She shook her head. “He’s at Joe and Bailey’s. Benji wanted him to spend the day there.”

“And that makes you sad?”

“No. I’m happy he’s making friends.”

“But?”

“No buts.”

He nudged her in the belly, forcing her back a step, then followed and closed the door behind him. He took the bag out of her hands and lowered it to the small hall table.

“Oh, there’s a but.” He slid his arms around her waist.

“Ford, what are you doing?”

“Hell if I know, but I need to do it.”

The kiss was deep and consuming. Her hands went to his shoulders to steady her and then slid around his neck when he pulled her closer. Splayed his palm on her back and kissed the breath out of her. Her body started to simmer as need pulsed through her.

“Hi, Ford.”

He took his time lifting his head and stepping back from her.

“Hey, Mr. Goldhirsh.”

“Excellent timing. Pearl needs a wool winder.”

Autumn couldn’t look at the older man, so she clenched her eyes shut.

“Wool winder?”

“Come through. I’ll show you.”

Mr. Goldhirsh disappeared.

“What’s he doing here?” Ford whispered.

“I didn’t find the email until yesterday, and then they all just arrived today.”

“They?”

“The knitting club.”

“Oh hell no. I’ve heard about them.” Ford started backing to the door.

“Ford!” a voice called from the living room. “Come here a minute, will you? I won’t give your dog back until you do.”
