He looked panicked, and she would have laughed if she didn’t feel the same. Would Mr. Goldhirsh say he’d seen them kissing? Did she care if he did? Did he care?

They heard a loud bang, and in seconds Ford passed her and was headed to the living area. She followed to find a chair had fallen on its side. Autumn wasn’t sure how it got there as no one was beside it.

“Ah, there you are,” Jack said with a smirk on his face.

“What the hell are you doing, Trainer?”

“And there was me thinking you were the smart one in your family.” Jack shook his head. “This here is wool.” He held up a piece. “And these are used to knit it into something.” He waggled his needles.

“Come and sit here, Ford,” Miss Marla said. “I need a wool winder, and you have lovely, big strong hands.”

“I need to go.”

“No, you don’t. He’s lying,” Rory said. “I’ll make coffee and bring in the food. How do you take it, Ford?”

“What?” He was standing just inside the door, and Autumn had moved to his side.

“How do you like your coffee?”

“White with three sugars.”

“Really? Yuck.” Jack needled him.

“Ford, sit!” Miss Marla’s schoolteacher voice got him moving. He walked across the floor and took the seat beside her that Autumn had vacated. Eyes wide, he looked like a deer in headlights.Cute, she thought, and soooo hot.

Autumn went to the kitchen in case what that kiss had done to her was showing on her face. Rory was in there, making Ford’s coffee.

“Need some help?”

“Sure. You take the cakes in. They like things on plates, not out of bags, with side plates to eat off and napkins.”

“Right.” She grabbed plates.

“So… Ford. What’s the deal?”

“Deal?” She didn’t look at Rory.

“You and him and the sparks, and the fact he’s here.”

“He was just dropping something off.”Where had she put them? The hall, Autumn realized. Ford had left them there.

“Sure he was, and okay, I won’t push, but I’m telling you there are sparks between you two.”

When Autumn took the plates into the living room. Ford’s hands were being used to wind wool around. He looked in pain. Kismet, however, was seated on Mrs. Blake’s foot, looking longingly at the cake she was eating.

“You should get him knitting,” Jack said to the group. “Ford needs to relax more.”

The look Ford gave him should have burned him to ashes.

“That’s okay, Jack. I’ll leave that to you. I know you have a lot of things to work through.”

Autumn was pretty sure he muttered,“Like your masculinity.”

“You should try Mrs. Blake’s apple-and-cinnamon cake, Ford,” Miss Marla said.

“I have wool on my hands,” he said slowly.

“I’ll have you free soon,” Pearl said.
