Autumn brought in a chair from the dining room and sat. Retrieving her knitting, she dived in, keeping her eyes lowered because every time she looked at the pained expression on Ford’s face, she wanted to laugh. Well, laugh and tingle all over.

“What?” She mouthed as he smiled at her through his gritted teeth. Really nice, even white ones that she imagined… Nope, not going there.

“Jed said he intercepted a package for Bob and Nancy. He had to open it in case it was drugs,” Mrs. Trask said.

The knitting club all nodded and hummed their agreement with Bob from the post office’s actions.

Was there a need to open people’s packages in a town like Ryker Falls? Autumn was fairly sure they didn’t trip over criminals or drug runners on a daily basis. She shot Ford a look. The wool had left his hand, and he was now holding a plate with a large wedge of apple-and-cinnamon cake in one hand and coffee in the other. She had a feeling that was so they didn’t try to use them for more wool winding.

He looked uncomfortable and sexy. The man just lit a fuse inside her, and she wasn’t sure what to do about that.

Do I want to do something about it?

The voice in her head yelled a loud yes.

“What was in the package?” Jack asked with a smirk on his face. He threw another heart into the basket and sat back in his chair as if waiting for something.

“Bob said it was the standard bottle of lube. They get the 1.5 gallon now. Not sure what the hell you’d do with that much lube.” Mrs. Trask stretched out her foot and rolled her ankle from side to side.

“They must slather that stuff all over themselves,” Mr. Goldhirsh said.

Ford coughed and choked but managed to keep the mouthful of cake down. Miss Marla whacked him on the back.

“The package had one of those things that has two bits. The Double Exciter it was called. Came with batteries. Also some round balls.”

Autumn couldn’t look at him, so she kept her eyes on the heart she was knitting, which now resembled a dog turd.

“Hold up.” Ford’s voice rose. “Who are you talking about?”

“Bob and Nancy, bud, keep up,” Jack said. “They get at it all the time, and Bob orders toys. They come wrapped in brown paper most often.”

“At it?” Ford repeated as his eyes went around the room.

“Sex, son. You know what that is, right?” Mr. Goldhirsh said.

Jack was shaking with silent laughter, and Rory wore a huge grin.

“I’ve heard of it,” Ford muttered, his face red. “I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. This town is weird.”

“That’s what makes it the wonderful place it is to live,” Mrs. Trask said.

They talked more about Bob and Nancy and how exciting their sex life apparently was. Autumn kept her eyes on her knitting, not sure if she wanted to laugh or blush.

“Autumn, that was wonderful,” Mr. Goldhirsh said forty minutes later.

“Lovely, dear,” Mrs. Trask said. “We’ll be back.”

“Now they know you can make tea correctly,” Rory whispered to her.

The surprise was Ford was still here, although that could be attributed to the food he had consumed.

They left after cleaning away all the food and storing it in her cupboards even though she’d told them to take it. Ford carried out a box of stuff for Mrs. Blake.

Autumn thought he’d leave, because she was fairly sure he was still in shock. She was just about to head back to the kitchen when a knock sounded. She found him and his dog standing in her doorway. He walked inside, nudging her back a step, then closed the door and locked it.

“Ford?”

“I know.” He claimed her mouth again in a hard kiss. “I’ve watched you for the past hour and thought about getting my hands and mouth on you. I’m so hard I hurt.”
