“Strangely no. Now back to your ex. What did he want?”

“Money, or more importantly, me to get him money by lying.”

“Shithead. Does he give you any support for Ritchie?”

She shook her head. “I told you his parents offered to raise Ritchie as their own, and when I refused, they vowed we would get nothing more from them.”

“They sound like real good folks. I’m trying to work out here how your ex-asshole thinks you could come up with money by lying.”

Ford’s thumb was still stroking her skin. She shot Nash a look. He was looking at them, smiling. It was surely obvious now that something was between them. Ford had stepped in when Nick dragged her out of the rec center, and now he was holding her hand.

“Your brother is watching.”

“Nice. Now answer the question.”

“He wanted me to call his parents and tell them Ritchie needed an operation and then give the money they gave me to him.”

“That motherfucking son of a bitch!”

As Ritchie had Luke’s headset on, he didn’t hear, but Luke did. He turned along with Nash and Luna to look at them.

“Sorry. Her ex is a douchebag.” Ford waved his hand in an apology.

“Anyway, I told him no and to leave. Told him that if he didn’t go, I was calling my friends. Calling you.”

“Good girl.”

“I don’t think he’ll be back. Before, he didn’t hassle me too much because of my grandparents, but I guess now that I’m alone—”

“You’re not alone.”

And didn’t that make her feel warm all over.

“I’m not weak, Ford, nor am I pathetic. I can stand up for myself. I raised my son alone, even living with my grandparents.”

“I know you’re strong. Anyone who is a single parent is that and more.”

He just kept saying all the right things.

“So he’s just calling you?”

“He changed his phone number, but now I’m just going to let any numbers I don’t recognize go to voice mail.”

“Good idea.”

“Thanks for holding Mom’s hand, Ford,” Ritchie said, returning to his seat.

“All good, bud. Anytime.”

They came in to land, and he kept her hand in his until they were heading to the hangar.

“Thank you, Ford.” She eased her hand out of his.

“Welcome.”

They were soon off the plane with their luggage.

“The others should be here by now,” Luke said when they were all in the taxi, driving into town.
