“Which blue?”

“Cobalt blue.”

“Ooh yes, that’s lovely. What is your favorite song?”

“‘Sweet Child O’ Mine,’ Guns N’ Roses.”

She giggled again, the sound sweet on the still night air.

“What?”

“Nothing. It suits you.” She patted his hand again.

“Because I’m a sweet child?” He kissed the back of her neck. “Now answer my question, Birdie. Do you eat enough?”

“Yes. I just don’t gain a lot of weight.” She yawned again after she spoke.

“Do you eat meat?”

“Aha, just not at home.” Her words sounded slurred now, and Sawyer knew she was on the edge of sleep. He lay there with her head pillowed on his arm, inhaling her scent. Enjoying the feel of her resting against him. When her breathing steadied, she started snuffling.

Sawyer wondered what the hell he was doing. He didn’t hold a woman like this after sex.Making love, the voice inside his head corrected him.

But he was holding Birdie, and the hell of it was he didn’t want to let her go.

You don’t get close to women.Never again, he’d vowed after Jolena.

Easing his arm out from beneath her as he felt the bite of fear claw through him, Sawyer got out of the bed and pulled the blankets over Birdie. Picking up his clothes, he then walked into the bathroom. Minutes later, he was heading to the front door.

“Shit,” he hissed as something sharp bit into his leg. Looking down, he saw a large ginger cat. It had its paws around his calf, and they were digging in.

Sawyer tried to shake it free, but it didn’t move.

“I didn’t hurt her,” Sawyer whispered, bending to speak to the feline. “Seriously, go check.” He then ran a hand over the cat’s head. It started purring.

And they say people are crazy. It let him go and then sat to look up at him.

“We good?” The cat continued to purr, so he walked to the front door and hoped he could make it without another surprise attack.

Studying the lock after he’d closed the door, Sawyer thought it needed changing. Climbing into his pickup, he then drove home and tried not to think about what he’d left behind in that bed and what he was supposed to do now.

Birdie was the light, and he was the dark. You couldn’t get two more different people, and Sawyer didn’t think he had change in him anymore.

But the hell of it was, he’d never felt like he did with her. Not even with Jolena, and he’d believed he loved her.

Chapter29

Lyntacky had two baseball teams: the Lemon Levelers and the Lavender Leaders. The Dukes played for the Leaders, and the Kellers played for the Levelers, which, according to the Lyntacky locals, was a good thing.

No one really knew where the bad blood between them originated, other than they’d always had a rivalry. Ryder had told Birdie that Sawyer and Beau Keller took that to the next level.

She’d felt Sawyer’s anger that night in The Roll Away when Lloyd had grabbed her and Beau stepped in.

“This should be a good game,” Nina said from her seat in the bleachers beside Birdie. “These two go at each other every year for the title of best team in Lyntacky.”

“Do you play, Nina?” Her friend had her Leaders shirt and cap on.

“Not since school. I don’t enjoy getting sweaty unless I’m having sex.”
