“The psycho ex on your arm Jolena?” Beau asked.

“She’s bad news,” Ryder said.

The ping of J.D.’s phone had him tensing.

“That’s her,” his friend said.

“How the fuck has she been in town and I haven’t known?” Sawyer said. “Why does she have Nina?”

“You don’t go into town, and none of us knew what your ex was like, bro. It was easy for her,” Dan said.

“Show me the picture.” Beau held out his hand for Sawyer’s phone.

“She was there at the Circle Left after the game,” Beau said, looking at the screen. “I saw her when I went to the bathroom but no other time.”

“She was probably hiding, so Sawyer didn’t see her,” Uncle Asher said.

“And Nina was dancing with you and sitting all over you,” Brody said to Sawyer. “Then you took her home. So, if she’s wanting to hunt down your woman so she can have you for herself, Nina would be one.”

“She was at the game,” Sawyer said. “I saw her but convinced myself it wasn’t her.”

“Then she saw you with Birdie there,” Ryder added. “She could have her and Nina.”

“Is this for real?” Beau said. “Some bitch is that desperate over you, she’s going to remove the competition?”

“She’s insane,” Sawyer said.

Had Jolena seen him pull Birdie into the supply closet at Circle Left? The thought of her anywhere near Jolena made ice fill his veins. Nina, too, was a friend. He knew what Jolena was capable of. Would she hurt them? A voice in his head said yes.

“We have to find them. This was her warning, and now she’s gone after the two women she clearly sees as a threat to her,” Uncle Asher said. “I’ve sent her picture out to everyone in town to be on the lookout. I’ve given Nina’s plates and the make of her car to highway patrol. We’ll find them.”

He prayed Jolena didn’t have Birdie too, and she’d walked home because something was wrong with her bike.

“Nina is on my plan,” J.D. said suddenly. “Track her phone.”

“I can do that.” Brody held out his hand, and J.D. passed him his phone.

They stood in tense silence, waiting while Beau’s crew continued to monitor the fire that was now out, and finally Brody said, “I have them.”

Grabbing the phone, Sawyer jumped in his pickup. Around them, cars loaded with people and then he was driving out of the yard faster than he’d ever done before.

Birdie had to be safe. No other option was acceptable because this time when he got her back, he wasn’t letting her go.

Chapter36

“What the fuck, Jolena. You’re doing this because Sawyer dumped your scrawny ass?” Nina asked from the driver’s seat.

“You shut your mouth. Sawyer loves me. He just needs to be reminded of that. Those two were just fun, and I wanted him to join in.”

“Those two what?” Birdie asked.

“His neighbors. He found us, but it meant nothing. I love Sawyer.” Her laugh sounded crazy, and Nina looked in the mirror at Birdie.

“You slept with his neighbors, both of them?” she said from the back seat.

The gun swung to point at her. “Sawyer doesn’t care about either of you, and he knows I’m the one. He loves me. He said so. My name is on his arm.” Jolena’s eyes were wild, body tense. Lips pulled in a hard line. “He wants to marry me.”

“Not anymore it’s not,” Nina said, sounding way calmer than Birdie felt. “He’s had it wiped out with a really cool black ink pattern.”
