“What’s going on, Sawyer?” Beau asked him.

“A woman who Larry Limpet and his friends spent time with in his bakery told them her name was Kathleen Keller. Dan also met her and knew she was your cousin.”

Beau’s face lost its sneer. “I swear I don’t have a cousin called Kathleen. What’s going on, Sawyer?”

“Fuck!”

“So she walked into town announcing she was Kathleen Keller, and no one thought to check?” Uncle Asher said, having followed Sawyer.

“Why would we check? She was nice and seemed genuine,” Dan said.

“But we’re pretty sure now it’s Sawyer’s psycho ex masquerading as Beau’s cousin. And clearly, she has an agenda and is coming after you,” Uncle Asher said. “You can’t write something like this,” he added, grim-faced. “Only a fucking Duke.”

“I should have told you all. I’m sorry,” Sawyer said.

“What psycho ex masquerading as my cousin?” Beau asked.

Everyone ignored him.

“I need a picture, Sawyer. I’ll get it out on the airways, and then we’re locking you and your family down,” Uncle Asher said.

“I’m looking for her,” he said. “It’s me she wants.”

“You will not be bait, bro,” Dan said. “Let us handle this.”

Another car pulled up, and his mother and Ally got out, both running to the offices.

“Okay, good. Everyone is here now,” Uncle Asher said.

“What happened?” his mother demanded.

“Where’s Birdie,” Ally said, looking worried.

“What? Why are you asking about her?” Sawyer stared at his niece.

“We stopped to check because her bike was lying on the side of the road, but she wasn’t with it. Nana and I thought she’d be here.”

“She’s not,” Sawyer said as a slither of dread ran up his spine. “Was the tire on her bike flat?”

“I don’t think so, but Nana might know.”

“Mom, was Birdie’s tire on her bike flat?” Sawyer demanded.

“No, and why does that matter? What’s going on, Sawyer?”

He looked to J.D., who had just entered the building. “What?” Sawyer asked, taking in his friend’s pale face.

“Larry Limpet just called me, and when I can think clearly, I’ll want to know who gave him my number, but he just saw a woman force Nina into her car at gunpoint.”

“What?”

“He said it was Kathleen Keller, Beau’s cousin. Apparently, she spent some time in his bakery playing cards. Really friendly, according to Larry. Asked lots of questions about the town and all the families who lived in it,” J.D. said.

Sawyer pulled out his phone and called Birdie. She didn’t pick up. “Phone me as soon as you get this, Birdie. Straightaway.” Then he cut the call.

“Why is Birdie involved?” Beau demanded.

“J.D., I’m sending you a picture. Forward it to Larry Limpet to confirm that Kathleen is actually Jolena.”
