“Sawyer, I can walk.”

Ignoring her, he carried her to his house. Inside, he lowered her onto his sofa. “Stay,” he said.

Running back out the door, Sawyer let his dogs out. They shot inside and straight for Birdie.

“Hello.” She was hugging them both when he arrived. “Aren’t you beautiful?”

“Ted and Sylvie,” Sawyer said. She was smiling now.

He took the seat beside her. Picking her up, he settled her gently on his lap.

“I love your house, Sawyer.” Her eyes were going everywhere.

“Good, because you’ll be spending lots of time here. Now, Birdie, I need you to listen to me, okay?”

She nodded, her eyes on his.

“I know we didn’t do things the normal way, and I was a shithead who couldn’t see what was in front of me.”

“No, Sawyer, we were both—”

He put his hand over her mouth.

“I was a shithead, but I need you to know I love you, and I’m making it right.”

“I love you too, Sawyer.”

“That’s good then. You’re brave, you’re happy, and you’re intelligent, Birdie. I love you because you’re the light to my dark. When I’m with you, I feel as if I’m not just going through each day because it’s what I have to do. You make me feel, baby, like I’ve never felt before. I just didn’t realize it until you told me you didn’t want me around anymore.”

When she opened her mouth, he kissed her to shut her up.

“I want to travel with you. I want to live my life with you, and I can help you be brave if you help me to be the same, Birdie.”

Her hand cupped his cheek. “Really? You want to travel with me? You really want to be with me?”

“I do, more than anything. You weren’t what I thought I needed, just as I’m sure I wasn’t what you needed. But I can’t live without you, Birdie.”

The tears started then.

“Please don’t cry.”

“I’m happy.”

“Well, that’s good then. If you want to go away to study, I’ll go with you. If you want to travel to the other side of the world, I’m coming. You’re it for me, Birdie.” Sawyer had never opened himself up like this before. It wasn’t comfortable, but he knew that for them to have a chance, he had to do it.

“R-really?” she whispered.

“You need to see what other people see when they look at you, baby. You are Little Miss Sunshine.MyLittle Miss Sunshine,” he added. “You make people smile and feel good, Birdie.”

“Thank you.”

“It’s the truth. Why can’t you see what everyone else does?” If it took him ten years, he’d make her understand how special she was.

“You’re it for me too, Sawyer.” The words were whispered, but he heard them.

“I better be.” He pulled her closer.

“Can I ask you something?”
