“Anything.” He kissed the top of her head.

“Are you rich?”

That surprised him. He had planned to tell her about his money and what he’d done, but he was working around to it.

“Yes.”

“Did you pay dad’s bills?”

He nodded.

“And are you also responsible for all the things that happen to locals? The tax rebates and lottery winnings?”

He wouldn’t lie to her. Not now. He didn’t want any secrets between them if they were going to make this work.

“You know how I went to LA?”

Birdie nodded.

“My friend Nick asked me to invest in his startup company, so I did and then went to LA to help him. It took off, and we made a lot of money. More money than me or my family needed. So along with J.D., we started RAK.”

“Random Acts of Kindness?”

“Smart girl.” He kissed her nose. At least she didn’t seem angry. “And before you tell me that paying your bills is too much money, it’s not.”

“What you’ve done, helping all those people who were desperate, Sawyer? It’s such a wonderful and generous thing.”

He shrugged. “It’s not just me, Birdie. J.D. and the rest of my family are part of it.”

“I knew you were a good man.”

“I’m not sure how because I was always grumpy, but you make me want to be a better man.” He kissed her again.

“I need to pay you back in some way, Sawyer.” She burrowed into him, her arms around his neck.

“I’ll think of something. So, is that a yes? You’re in this with me?”

“Yes.” It was muffled, but he heard it, and for now that was enough. He had his girl. They’d work out the rest later. Right now, he just wanted to hold the woman he loved.

Chapter38

He wrenched open the door and sprinted into the police station.

“Sawyer, wait up.”

“What the fuck, Dan!” The words exploded out of him. “You’ve locked up my girl, and I want her out now.”

When his brother called him to say Birdie was behind bars, he’d cut the call before Dan could explain why. Sawyer had then jumped in his pickup and made for town. The entire way he’d told himself to calm down, it hadn’t worked.

“You need to calm down now, bro. Nothing good can happen if you don’t,” his brother said, coming around the desk. He now stood inches away from Sawyer and within strangling distance.

“Why?” Sawyer demanded.

“You know the rules, Sawyer. If you don’t dance, you get locked up.”

“What?” He actually shook his head. “Birdie didn’t dance?”

“Nope. Deliberately walked away. Apparently, this week she’s working on rebelling. You know how last week she played for us in the Lavenders?”
