“What?” The word came out as a squeak.

“Your bottom lip is fuller than the top one.” He leaned in and touched her mouth with his. The kiss was soft, brief, and then he pulled back. “I’ll pick you up at 7:30 p.m.”

“Why did you do that?”

He didn’t answer and just walked to the room across the hall from hers. Sawyer swiped his card and then disappeared inside.

Birdie fumbled with hers and got it on the third try, then she stumbled inside. Dropping her bag, she pressed her back into the door.

Sawyer Duke had kissed her, and she’d liked it. Not only had she liked it, but she’d wanted more.

Chapter17

He’d had ninety minutes to wonder what the hell he’d been doing kissing Birdie McAllister before he had to see her again.

After Sawyer stepped into his hotel room, he’d walked into the bathroom. Stripping off his clothes, he turned on the water and grabbed his cock, stroking it to release while he thought about Birdie McAllister.

She was his brother’s friend, for fuck’s sake. He’d never thought of her that way. Little Miss Sunshine was not his type. He liked a woman who wanted what he did. Sex with no strings.

Why did he want her now, when she’d been on the fringes of his life for years? It made no sense.

Leaving his room, he walked across the hall to hers. Looking at her door, he wondered what she’d be wearing and hoped it was baggy and didn’t show off her body like that skirt and shirt had. He could cope with Birdie that way.

Knocking, he stepped back and waited. The door opened seconds later, and there she stood, so sexy he wanted to back her into the room and kiss her.

“Ready?” he grunted instead.

She nodded and stepped into the hallway in a dress that was the color of the sky on a clear Lyntacky day. It skimmed her, highlighting her curves, and the hem sat a few inches above her knees. Heels raised her height several inches but still had her looking up at him.

Fuck.He did not want to want this woman. It complicated everything.

“Is there anything I should know? I mean, anything you’ve said about me being here. I’m sure you didn’t mention blackmail,” she said as they entered the lift.

“No.”

“Just, no?”

“No, there isn’t anything you should know.”

“Okay.”

She’d left her hair long, but it was curly. All of it. Long, loose curls, and her face was different. Makeup highlighted her blue eyes, and that mouth he’d kissed was painted a glossy pink.

“You look nice,” he said.

“Thanks. You too.” She shot him a look.

“How’s your room?”

“My bed is so soft and huge. And I took a bubble bath, and my feet didn’t even reach the end. Then I ate the complimentary fruit and chocolate while soaking.”

He said something and did not swallow his tongue at the thought of her wet and naked, covered in bubbles while eating chocolate.

Sawyer was fast realizing that blackmailing Birdie McAllister into coming with him to Autumn’s wedding had been a real dick move.

They got out of the lift, and he reminded himself he was a grown-assed man who could control his urges.

The dining room was full of people, most he knew. Tables were laid out with white cloths and set up for dinner.
