He couldn’t touch her again. She was too sweet and innocent, and he wasn’t. Plus, they lived in the same town. There was also the fact that Birdie was a forever-after girl.

She’d had her heart broken once. He didn’t like the jealousy he felt that another man had gotten close to her. She was becoming a problem for Sawyer. This need he felt for a woman he’d known for years had to stop, and when he got back to Lyntacky, he’d be avoiding her to make sure it did.

Chapter21

Birdie stood before the mirror in her room dressed for the wedding. She’d done her makeup like Nina and Cill showed her and was now having a tough talk with herself about how she was going to behave when she saw Sawyer.

“Just act like nothing has happened,” she told her reflection.

He’d been in her head all day from the minute she’d opened her eyes. She’d alternated between smiling and blushing over what they’d done… what he’d done to her in this room.

He’d given her the orgasm to beat all orgasms. Not that she had much to compare that with. Steve hadn’t really been into pleasuring her before they got down to the act.

Sawyer had left her sated while he’d been hard and unsatisfied.

“Don’t think about it.” She shook her hands. “You can do this.”

She also couldn’t stop thinking about the look on Sawyer’s face when he’d seen his sister, Zoe. Pure joy. He’d smiled, and it had been the first full-face smile she’d ever seen him give. He’d then wrapped his arms around his sister and hugged her close. The emotion had been genuine from all the Dukes.

Birdie’s siblings loved her, but she didn’t see them often. What would it be like to have a brother nearby who loved her like that? The tug of longing had surprised her. They’d been gone so long now that she’d gotten used to it. But seeing that reunion had stirred up something inside her.

In that room downstairs last night, surrounded by people, she’d felt lonely.

A knock on her door had her freezing.

“Open up, Birdie.” Another loud knock followed this. “Let’s go.”

How would she face him? The man had…don’t think about it.

She grabbed Cill’s bag off the bed. Taking a deep, steadying breath, she reminded herself that she felt nothing for Sawyer Duke, and she could do this. She was good at acting. No one had to know what was going on inside her head.

Opening the door, she found Sawyer standing there like a big, dark, sexy beast in a pair of black trousers and a pale blue shirt. He’d trimmed his beard and hair shorter.

“You have less hair.” Birdie pointed to his head and then chin.

“Zoe did it. She said I looked like a mountain man.”

His eyes were doing a slow survey of her body, and she felt everywhere they landed.

“You look hot.”

“Thanks. You too. Handsome, I mean,” she added quickly.

“Birdie, about last night—”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” she blurted. “What happened is in the past. We never have to discuss it again. Let’s just get this over, and then we can fly home tomorrow and not talk to each other.”

His lips turned up slightly. “Do you always speak fast when you’re nervous?”

She was going to deny it, but it was the truth, so she nodded.

“I shouldn’t have done that, and I’m sorry, Birdie.”

“We shouldn’t have done it, and I’m sorry too.”

They stared at each other.

“The problem is, I want to do it again,” he said in a low voice.
