Just a few words spoken in his deep, growly tone and she was melting.

“But we can’t, no matter how much we want to because it’s complicated, and I’m not really a one-night stand type of girl, and there’s the fact we have nothing in common.”Good, Birdie. That was exactly the right thing to say.

“Agreed,” Sawyer said. He grabbed her hand and jerked her out of her doorway. “Let’s go.”

He towed her along the hall to the lift.

“You don’t need to drag me. I’m coming anyway.”

“Sorry.” He released her. One large finger jabbed the button to call the elevator. “We have one thing in common,” Sawyer said as it arrived.

They stepped inside, and there were four people in there. Sawyer took the back, and she stood in front of him.

“We’ve both had our hearts broken.” He’d leaned forward and whispered the words into her ear. The hard planes of his chest brushed her back, and she felt surrounded by him.

She didn’t deny it. Steve had broken her heart, and clearly Sawyer had loved Jolena enough to get her name on his arm.

“How’s the tattoo coming along?” she asked after the doors opened and they’d stepped out.

“J.D. wanted me to just cross out her name and put ‘shit happens’ under it.”

“Nice. That would work,” Birdie said.

They were walking side by side, his arm brushing hers as they moved. She was far too aware of this man.

“But we went for a black ink work design over it instead.”

“How come it took you so long to get it done, Sawyer?”

He didn’t answer her right away, and Birdie thought maybe he wouldn’t.

“I don’t know.”

“Maybe you believed she’d come back?” Birdie said.

“Did you think Steve would come back?”

She felt his eyes on her but kept hers forward. Thinking about Steve didn’t hurt like it used to. Now it just made her angry.

“Maybe to start, but now I’d kick him where it hurts if he showed up.”

“Good girl, and the answer is no, I didn’t expect Jolena would return, and I didn’t want her to. I’m not sure why I didn’t get it removed until now.”

“But the time is right?”

He nodded.

“I’m pleased. You don’t need that faithless bitch taking up prime real estate like that.”

He laughed. A full bark of laughter. It looked good on him. His eyes lit up, and his face softened.

“What?”

“You talking like that. It’s a shock. Little Miss Sunshine doesn’t speak that way.”

“Now we both know that’s not true.” Birdie waggled her eyebrows.

“How is Murray?”
