“You scrubbed up okay,” Sawyer said to his sister.

“Gee thanks. You use that oil on your beard?” Zoe asked him.

Birdie felt his shoulder rise and fall on a sigh.

“Yes.”

All the brothers had their hair trimmed, even Brody, who kept his longer. They each wore trousers and button-down shirts in varying colors.

“Back a day and already organizing us,” Ryder said.

“Someone has to. Mom’s too nice,” Zoe said.

“Great to have you back to help, sweetie,” Robyn Duke said from the row in front of them.

“I love your dress, Mrs. Duke.” Birdie elbowed Sawyer after she’d spoken.

“What?” he whispered.

“Tell your mother she looks nice,” Birdie hissed back.

“Why?”

“Because you never tire of hearing it, and just because she’s your mom doesn’t mean she’s immune to compliments.”

He smelled really good.

“You look good, Mom,” he said.

“Thanks, honey.” She smiled at him.

“Suck up,” Dan muttered. “You look amazing, Mom.”

“Prettiest woman here,” Ryder said.

“Gee, thanks,” Zoe and Birdie said at the same time.

“Besides you two.” Ryder smiled, the one that flashed his dimples, and those eyes turned a little wicked. She could understand why most of the women in Lyntacky had fallen for him.

“How’s Ally, Brody?” Sawyer asked his brother, who sat in the front row.

“Excited. We had a breakdown this morning because she couldn’t find Les.”

“Crap. Where was he?” Sawyer asked.

“She’d taken him into the bathroom.”

“Les?” Birdie asked.

“Lester the Lion was purchased in Disneyland when she was three. Ally hasn’t been separated from him since then,” Brody said.

“Ah, right. I had a blanket like that.”

“So did Sawyer. Funny how you both had them,” Robyn Duke said.

“Sawyer’s was lemon with white polka dots and little cars. It had silk ribbon binding—”

“I don’t think we need to—”
