This time it was she who laughed. It felt good, and some of the tension between them eased.

They were aware of each other. His words had told her that, but she thought they could at least be in each other’s company and enjoy the wedding now.

“How do you know she was faithless? Maybe it was me?”

“What?”

“How do you know Jolena was faithless and not me?” Sawyer asked her.

“A hunch. Was she?”

“She was a cheating bitch.”

“One thing I know about you Dukes is you’re loyal. You’d never cheat, it’s not in your DNA.”

“Thank you. That means a lot, and I’m glad you like my arms.”

She looked up at him again.

“You said my arms were prime real estate.”

She had said that and meant it. He had strong arms that would hold a woman like she mattered.

“Don’t let it go to your head.”

“I won’t.”

He put a hand on her spine and steered her through a door that led outside. Birdie saw seats set out in rows. White bows were on the end of each aisle and tall stands of flowers at the beginning. They’d adorned the huge wedding arch with more floral displays where the service would be held.

She felt a brief stab of regret. Her mother had planned to build an arch like that for her wedding to Steve, which they’d decided to have at their home in Lyntacky.

“You have the same look on your face my mom gets when she sees babies,” Sawyer said.

“That setting is so lovely,” Birdie said. “Weddings bring out all that kind of emotion. Joy, tears, and happiness.”

“Money, cleanup, and hangovers.”

“It’s okay to be happy, you know, Sawyer. I bet you’ll cry like a baby when one of your siblings marries.”

“I’ll cry with relief that someone else has to worry about them,” he added.

They walked down the aisle to where his family was sitting in the front two rows.

“I can sit there if—”

He nudged her in the back and into the second row next to Zoe.

“You don’t have to push me.”

“You were about to say you want to sit back there. Not happening, so I made the choice for you.”

She sat, and he took the one next to her. His big body was close to hers, their thighs touching.

“Birdie, you look amazing.” Sawyer’s sister was beside her.

“Thanks, Zoe, you too.”

And she did. This Duke was a softer, smaller version of her big brothers. Dark hair, tall, with a beautiful face. They all had that amazing bone structure. She wore a dark blue sheath dress that looked stunning on her.
