“You have a serious attitude.” He jabbed a finger her way.

“You getting drinks or just flirting with the staff?” Ryder asked, arriving.

Birdie snorted out a laugh. “Him flirting?”

Ryder glanced from her to Sawyer. “You could be right.”

“You want a drink, Ryder?” Birdie asked him.

He smiled and then reeled off an order. “He was supposed to be getting them”—he nodded to Sawyer—“so he can pay.”

“He gets a smile, and I get your shit,” Sawyer said after his brother had gone.

“Maybe if you were nice, you’d get nice back. Now hand over your money.” She held out her hand, and he put his card into it. She refused to acknowledge the small charge of excitement that shot through her as their skin connected.

“Don’t let that asshole Lloyd touch you again, Birdie.”

“I think I’ve told you I can take care of myself.”

“You being such a big, strong girl with attitude, after all.”

She slapped the card down on the bar in front of him. “Go away.”

With a final dark look, he did, and she refused to watch that really nice ass of his in those worn jeans.

He will be nothing more than one night of great sex, she reminded herself. Birdie just needed to keep repeating it until it was true.

Chapter28

Another howl rose around them as a player went down, clutching his leg on the screen.

“They can’t lose him,” Zoe said.

“They won’t. Zack Tyler never stays down,” Brody said.

Sawyer was alternating between watching the game and searching for Birdie. She was everywhere. Clearing glasses, serving behind the bar. Taking orders and talking to patrons with a smile. The smile she never gave him.

It pissed him off she was nice to everyone but him. At least he was consistently grumpy.

Getting out of his seat when he didn’t see her, he looked around the Roll Away. No sign of her. Was Lloyd hassling her again?

Why am I doing this? She’s not mine to worry about. But he did worry about Birdie. She said she wasn’t his problem, and that she could take care of herself, but she couldn’t. That scum had put his hands on her, and if she’d been alone with him, he could have done a lot more.

Moving away from his family, who were once again yelling at the screen, he headed down past the restrooms.

“Your girl is taking a break out there.” Dee shot a thumb in the door's direction behind her.

“She’s not my anything.”

The woman snorted. “Who’s the idiot, then? That girl is the best, and about time you realized that before someone else does.” He watched her walk away from him.

He was about done with everyone pairing him and Birdie up.

Pushing open the door, Sawyer stepped out into the dark. Warm air settled around him as he walked. He found Birdie seated at a table that was fenced in and clearly for staff. In front of her was an empty plate.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”
