Page 11 of Summer Refresh

She pursed her lips and frowned at him. “You can’t.”

“Actually, I can.”

“I mean the inn is booked. To mess up the lobby now would create unnecessary havoc.”

He nodded as though he understood her problem with his plan. “I talked about that with Josie. It was her concern too. We decided there was no good time to do this, and seeing as the new furniture she ordered is due to be delivered by the end of next week, she gave me the go ahead.”

“But there’s a huge wedding in thirteen day. I can’t have the inn all messed up. There will be photos and guests. Lots of guests. They rented out the entire inn for that weekend.”

“I guess this means I better get to work.”

Sara crossed her arms as she continued to frown at him. “Can’t you move this to another time? Like next month? Or maybe after the summer rush?”

He shook his head. “I’m afraid not. I need to have this place ready for the furniture delivery.”

Sara opened her mouth to further argue the point, but if Josie, who now owned half of the inn, had approved this plan, she had no choice but to go along with it. The only thing she could do was make sure he completed this refresh as quickly as possible.

It was her chance to prove to Josie and Lane that she was capable of taking on greater responsibility. And now her chance of doing that was resting on Kent pulling off this redecorating thing in a timely manner. She didn’t like relying on other people. It never worked out for her.

She drew in a deep breath and released it. “How do you intend to do this without interrupting business?”

He paused as though he hadn’t given it any thought. He glanced around the room as though trying to come up with a plan. “I guess we could section off part of the lobby.”

She surveyed the room. The registration desk was on one side, and on the other side was seating and Bluestar memorabilia. There was no way you could only decorate part of the room. Whatever was done to one part had to be done to the other part.

She wondered just how many times Kent had redecorated. She thought of asking him, but bit back the words. Instead she asked, “So you’re only fixing up part of the room?”

“No. Of course not.”

“Then your idea won’t work.”

He frowned at her. “What would you suggest?”

Of course he’d leave it up to her. She withheld a sigh. “I don’t know. This is the first I’m hearing of it.”

“I apologize for springing this on you. The thing is I promised my sister the work would be completed by the time she returned. That doesn’t leave me much time.”

Wait. Had he just apologized to her? Maybe he wasn’t so bad after all. Or maybe he was just saying whatever he could to gain her help?

She moved toward the wide hallway leading to the dining room and other community rooms. There were double doors that led out into the garden. It was really the only reasonable solution.

“This will have to be the temporary check-in area.”

Kent turned around in a circle as though evaluating the area. “Works for me.”

“Now we need a temporary reception desk and signs.”

“Don’t worry about all of that. I’ll take care of it.”

She arched a brow. “Are you sure?”

He nodded before he set off. She watched him go. She couldn’t believe she’d have to put up with him for the next twelve days. Hopefully, they could avoid each other as much as possible.

Chapter Five

Itwasgettinglate.

Sunday afternoon, Kent couldn’t believe how long it was taking him to empty the lobby. The room held so much more stuff than he’d ever imagined. There were dozens and dozens of framed photos on the walls. And there were display cases with so much stuff in them. Each display had to be taken apart before it could be moved.
