Totally full, she pushed away her plate with some of her onion rings still on it. “Actually, I am interested, if you’re willing to share.”

“Well, why don’t we get out of here, and I’ll tell you?”

She nodded in agreement.

When she reached for her wallet, he said, “It’s on me.”

She continued to get out some cash. “Maybe another time but tonight we’re going Dutch.”

Once their bills were paid and a generous tip was left, they headed outside. It was a warm evening with lots of stars in the sky. On such a beautiful evening, she preferred to walk on the beach.

When Kent headed for his cart, she said, “I think I’m going to walk from here.”

“Mind if I walk with you?”

She arched a brow. “Are you afraid I’ll get lost on the way home?”

“No. If you don’t want me to walk with you, all you have to do is say so. But I thought you wanted to hear about why I was working on the lobby.”

She nodded. “Let’s go.” She led the way to the beach. “Sometimes in the evening, I like to walk here. It’s so much quieter than during the day when all of the tourists are out and about.”

He glanced around at a few other couples walking along the water’s edge. “It is peaceful.”

Her gaze kept straying to the other couples. One couple stopped to share a kiss. Suddenly, her idea for a moonlit walk didn’t seem like such a good idea.

She swallowed hard as she glanced away. “So, why are you working on the lobby?”

“I had this idea to add a service to the business…”

He continued to tell her about his refresh service as they walked along the beach. She found that she enjoyed his company, and the sound of his deep voice was soothing. If he hadn’t dated her sister, she could see them exploring this thing between them. After all, she’d had a crush on him before her sister dated him. But that was a long time ago.

Chapter Eight

Herheartraced.

The moonlight cast a romantic glow over them.

Sara struggled not to glance in Kent’s direction. She could sense the tension running between them. It wasn’t the same awkwardness that had existed when she first approached him about the apartment. This tension was much different.

Her stomach shivered with nerves. And she was aware of just how close he was to her. If she were to lean to the side just a bit, their shoulders would bump. Not that she was going to do such a thing.

Instead, as they walked their hands accidentally brushed each other. She resisted the urge to reach out and slip her hand into his. She didn’t know why she’d had the thought. It was so wrong. Sisters didn’t move in on the other sister’s guys, past or present. It just wasn’t something they did.

She inwardly groaned. Why was she thinking of Kent in that way? It wasn’t like she was interested in him. She didn’t even trust him at this point. He was still holding out about the past. Why wouldn’t he tell her?

Sure, he’d said it wasn’t his story to tell. Was that the truth or was he hiding something? Well, if it wasn’t his story to tell, that meant her sister was keeping a secret from her. The thought didn’t sit well with her. She’d always thought they confided in each other. At least she’d always confided in her sister. Surely her sister wouldn’t be holding out on her—especially when Cari knew how upset Sara had been with Kent after their break up.

“What has you so quiet?” His voice drew her from her thoughts.

There was no way she was telling him the truth. She wasn’t going to let him think she was that hung up on him. Because she wasn’t. Sure, she’d had a massive crush on him years ago and had been heartbroken when her sister started to date him, but that was all in the distant past.

“Nothing.” And then realizing he would keep pestering her until she gave him a legitimate answer, she said, “I’m just a bit tired. I’m not used to all of that painting.” She glanced over at him. “You don’t seem tired. You must do a lot of this kind of work.”

He shook his head. “I wouldn’t say a lot of it. I help out here and there if my family or friends need a hand fixing up their place. I know it’ll sound strange, but I find painting relaxing. I enjoy it.”

“That’s not strange at all. It’s great that you’ve found something you enjoy. Maybe you should do it all of the time.”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess that’s what I’ll figure out over these next couple of weeks.” He glanced at her. “What about you? What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working at the inn?”
