“I like to read.”

“Read? What sorts of books?”

“Mostly what the book club picks. Sometimes I’ll also read some romances and mysteries. It depends on how much time I have.”

“What’s this book club you mentioned?”

“There’s a group of us that meet over at the Seaside Bookshop. It started with just four of us, but now we’re up to eight people. We take turns each month picking out a book.”

“So, it’s a bunch of women who get together once a week?”

“No. The group actually includes a couple of men too. You should join us.” It wasn’t until the words were out of her mouth that she realized the invitation might not have been appropriate. It wasn’t like they were exactly friends. However, they were no longer enemies. She wasn’t exactly sure where it left them.

“I don’t know. It sounds like a big commitment.”

“It isn’t. All you have to do is read one book a month. And our meetings are only once a month, not every week.” And there she went again, trying to draw him into her world. She couldn’t seem to help herself.

“I’ll keep it in mind, but honestly I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be on the island.”

He was leaving? The thought filled her with sadness. Before she could figure out why she was having any feelings about whether he stayed or left Bluestar, a noise caught her attention.

She stopped walking. “Wait.”

He turned to her with a worried look. “What’s wrong?”

“Shh…” She held a finger to her lips to keep him from talking.

She didn’t hear anything now, but she was certain she’d heard something. It was a whining sound of some sort, but it’d been too brief for her to be able to distinguish the sound.

After a moment, Kent went to speak again, but there was the sound again. He wordlessly closed his mouth as his gaze moved to the beach grass. It was so dark that it was impossible to distinguish anything in the shadows.

“What is that?” he asked.

“I don’t know for sure, but it sounds like a kitten.”

“What would a kitten be doing all the way out here?”

“I don’t know, but we need to find it.”

They both turned on the light app on their cell phones. She wasn’t leaving there until she knew the kitten was safe. Where was he?

When Sara was young, she would bring home every stray or lost animal that crossed her path. One time she’d even convinced her parents to let her keep a dog.

“What has you so quiet?” he asked.

“You mean other than searching for the kitten that might have run away by now?”

“Yes, other than that.”

“If you must know, I was thinking about a stray dog that I found when I was a kid.”

“Did you keep him?”

“Of course.” She smiled at the memory of him.

“What was his name?”

“Spot.”
