“Well, this morning I did an internet search of the hotels and inns in Hartford.” The breath caught in her throat as she waited for his response. She hoped he’d be surprised and happy about the idea.

“Why would you do that?”

It was not the response she’d anticipated. “Because I’m moving there.” She stopped walking and turned to him. “What we have is too special to lose.” She drew in a deep breath and let it out. “Kent, I love you.”

His eyes momentarily widened. “I love you too.”

He drew her close to him. Her palms came to rest on his muscled chest. Her heart was pounding so loud it echoed in her ears. She wondered if he could hear it.

He loved her. He loved her. He loved her.

The very special words repeated over and over in her mind. Her heart was so full of love now that it felt as though it were going to burst. This was the best day of her life.

His gaze dipped to her lips. He was going to kiss her, and she couldn’t think of anything she’d like better. She lifted up on her tiptoes as she looped her arms around his neck. And then she pulled him toward her. When his lips touched hers, her heart pitter-pattered.

She didn’t care what it took; they would find a middle ground so they could be together. She was tired of losing the people she loved from her life. With her parents, it was beyond her control. With her sister, it was her sister’s choice. With Oreo, she couldn’t stop it. But with Kent, there was a will and there was a way. Hartford here she comes.

When they pulled away, he stared deep into her eyes. “I’m so sorry about all of what happened. I never meant to hurt you.”

“And I’m sorry for pushing you away. I don’t want to push you away anymore. I want to pull you close—very close.” She lifted up on her toes and pressed a quick kiss to his lips.

“Mm… I like being close to you too.” He smiled at her. “But you don’t have to move.”

“Yes, I do. We aren’t going to try a long-distance relationship. It just won’t work.”

“No. I mean you don’t have to move because I’m not leaving.”

“You’re not?” She was confused. “Why? What happened?”

He told her about the job offer in Hartford and how he’d told his parents. He told her about the contract his parents had drawn up. “And that’s why I’m not leaving Bluestar.”

Her gaze searched his. “Are you sure this is what you want?”

He nodded his head. “This is everything I’ve wanted. Bluestar is my home. I hope it will always be my home—with you.” He stared deep into her eyes. “I’ve never loved someone like I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Chapter Twenty-four

Hewassohappy.

She was so happy.

At last it was going to work out.

Before Kent could kiss her again, her phone started to ring. Talk about lousy timing. He restrained a sigh when she pulled away to answer the call.

Not much was said on her end. There was a lot ofuh-huhsandyeses. He was left to wonder who was on the other end of the conversation.

When tears splashed onto her cheeks, fear settled in his chest. It was all he could do not to rip the phone out of her hands and find out who was making her cry. But then she smiled at him through her tears and the knot of fear eased.

A few moments later Sara disconnected the call. “It was the Watsons. They wanted to know if I wanted to keep Oreo.”

“What did you tell them?”

“Of course I said yes.” More happy tears spilled onto her cheeks.

He reached out and pulled her into his arms. He enjoyed holding her close. They were like two puzzle pieces that fit perfectly together.
