“God, yes,” one of us says. It doesn’t matter who. Where one leaves off, the other begins. We’re one creature in this bed.

I ride. One hand before me on his chest and one hand behind me, balancing myself on his thigh, I undulate in a staccato rhythm, feeling him thick and hard and almost painfully long within me with each roll of my hips.

Luca presses his thumb to my clit and circles, and sensation coils and narrows to that one spot. My nails dig into his chest, coming away wet with his blood. Grinning, he grabs my wrist and forces it behind me, shackling it with its twin at the base of my spine.

Even when I’m on top, he demands control.

He fucks up into me hard and fast, and the orgasm rockets through me, shaking me to my soul. He follows after a second later, his cum spurting hot within me, shouting hoarsely into my throat, and clutching me to him before sinking back against the pillows. I collapse against him, exhausted.

Hours later, he rolls us over and tucks me against him, his hand stroking the curve of my hip lightly and raising gooseflesh.

I hum quietly. “No getting up and leaving me this time.”

He smooths my hair back from my cheek, damp with sweat. “I didn’t fight for you before. I had my reasons…things I can’t explain right now. But I will fight for you now.” His lips touch my head in a hard kiss. “I promise. I’ll keep fighting for you, always.”

Outside the window, it’s still storming, quick bursts of thunder and lightning having their own sensual dance of supremacy in the sky. Luca’s phone buzzes with a text, and he lifts it before both of our faces, opening it to read it with no regard for privacy.

I marvel even as I read the text. Something has changed between us. Something big.

“It’s the Coroner. He’s here early,” Luca says, shifting so he can rise. I watch as he crosses the room, the light from the hallway spilling inside the darkened bedroom and illuminating the lines of his body as he lifts the curtain to look outside. “Car’s there.”

We dress quickly, with me finding a cast-aside sweater in the owner’s closet of the rental to cover the buttonless shirt. I’m going to need to find some clothes. Luca’s destroying everything I have.

“What happens next?” I ask. I don’t want to go anywhere. I want to stay right here, cocooned in this little haven.

Luca checks the clip in his gun. “I’ll talk about that with the Coroner.”

“I need to get Baccio. I left him with my father’s men.”

And we need to figure out how we’re going to move forward as a couple, I want to say.

Will you ever trust me if you find out I was ordered to seduce you?

Will you ever believe my feelings are genuine?

I say none of this, though. Instead, I wait on the street while Luca jogs around to the driver’s side of the waiting car. He bends to peer inside, then straightens and looks up and down the street, his expression tight. “Get back inside.”

“What—?”

“Inside the apartment!”

A car goes by slowly, its headlights illuminating the inside of the Coroner’s car. Its back window is blown out.

I gasp, my hand flying up to cover my mouth.

So is the hitman’s face.

Chapter 19

Luca

Fuck.Fuck,fuck,fuck.

Thunder still rattles in the air, but it doesn’t clear the heaviness that’s settled on my shoulders. The bullet had ripped through the car and taken out the best hitman I knew. He must not have even noticed he was being followed or watched. Who the fuck is doing this? Someone with skills I have clearly underestimated.

Every turn I take, I’m hitting a brick fucking wall. Fear of being completely boxed in has me turning to Carina. They can’t touch me. They wouldn’t dare. But Carina…

She’s standing here in the living room, wrapped in a blanket with water dripping from her hair. She’s just staring at her shoes, saying nothing. This is twice now in the same twenty-four-hour period that she’s descended into this shocked silence. It isn’t like her. I’m used to her taking things head-on, to fighting through everything, pushing, colliding with me.
