“You don’t always get what you want.”

“You don’t know me very well, Forster.”

She might be smirking now, but she wasn’t smirking when I made her come three times in a row last night, and she wouldn’t be smirking when I did it again.

Mother watched me with an unimpressed expression. “Keep out of the papers. I mean it.”

I held my hands up. “I’m on my best behavior.”

“Make good choices. Actions have consequences.”

Chapter 26

Miri

AknocksoundedonMum’s front door. I opened it to find Gabe on the doorstep. My stomach swooped and I stepped onto the doorstep, pulling the door behind me.

“What are you doing? Why don’t you ever ring before you show up? Do all rich people turn up on each other’s doorsteps like this or just you?”

He smiled. “It’s urgent. I’m waiting for my picture.”

“Picture?”

“After your shower.”

What? Did he expect me to sext him? “I sent you a picture.”

“That’s not the picture I want.”

I leaned in, keeping my voice low. “What are you doing, Gabe? You can’t turn up like this. I thought you wanted to get me out of your system. We had our night together.”

“Right. The problem is, it’s made things worse.” He leaned in and whispered in my ear. “Now I’ve had a taste of you. I need more.”

His cool, clipped voice sent a shiver down my spine. I stepped away. We were on my doorstep. My family was inside the house. This wasn’t the time or the place for getting swept away by Gabe Rivers. I couldn’t let myself fall for this man. He’d drop me like a hot brick as soon as he’d had enough. We’d said one night. It wasn’t enough for me either, but better stop now before I got in too deep.

I folded my arms. “This sounds like a ‘you’ problem, not a ‘me’ problem.”

A small smirk graced his lips. “Is that so?” He swept a thumb along my jawline and my heart pounded. “You enjoyed yourself last night. What’s changed?”

“We said one night.”

“I know, and now I’ve changed my mind. I need to fuck you again tonight.”

My face warmed. I peered down the empty street. This village was full of curtain-twitchers eager to gossip. “Keep your voice down.”

Shouting and laughter blasted down the hallway behind us. Gabe quirked an eyebrow and tried to peer behind me through the crack in the door. “Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

“It’s not a good time. The twins are back from university. The house is chaos.”

“We’re fucking again tonight. My driver will come for you at 8 p.m.”

He twisted his cufflinks. The memory of when he’d given away a Rolex to help out a virtual stranger drifted to mind. Guilt prickled the back of my neck. I wanted to, but I couldn’t go there with him. Not after Jed. I had to protect my heart.

“I’m sorry. I have plans tonight.”

“Cancel them.”

“I can’t.”
