Elliot inclined his head in a nod.

“Which theater?”

Elliot’s intense gaze met Gabe’s. “The Grand.”

Gabe kept his voice casual, but his eyes sparkled with mischief. “My family has a private box at the Grand. You can all use it if you’d like.”

Frankie beamed and clapped her hands together. “Fantastic. It would be nice to get out of the cheap seats for a change.”

Gabe flashed an easy smile. “No problem.”

“We already have tickets. You don’t need to do that,” I said.

Gabe waved a dismissive hand. “It’s fine. It’s empty. Free champagne and the best view in the house. Why let it go to waste?”

“That’s good of you, Gabe. Thanks.” Reece’s shrewd eyes flashed from Gabe to me and I knew he wasn’t missing a minute of this unfolding. “But only if it’s not a problem.”

Gabe shook his head. “It isn’t. I haven’t seen a show in a while.” He turned on his heel. “I’ll see you all there later.”

What? No. Had he invited himself to the ballet?

I chased Gabe down the hall to the front door.

I grabbed his elbow, stilling him. “What are you doing?”

He raised an eyebrow. “Going back to work.”

“No. I mean about tonight. You’re seriously coming to watch ballet?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He stepped close, blocking me in against the wall. He gave me a bold, raking gaze. “When I ask for a naked picture, you’d better send it straight away next time. I want you in my bed tonight, Forster, and if I have to sit through an evening of pirouettes and your brother in tights, then so be it.”

Heat stole into my cheeks. I opened my mouth and closed it again. A half smile crossed his face before he turned on his heel and strode to the door.

Chapter 27

Gabe

Isatonabench in the park near Calverdale Station. For a moment, I shut my eyes and let the chatter of the birds fill my ears. I had work to do this afternoon, but Miri Forster’s pretty face wouldn’t be removed from my mind. A glow of amusement lit my chest just thinking about the horrified look she’d worn when I’d met her family. It was going to be fun at the ballet tonight. I liked making Miri Forster squirm. She was so easy to tease. I just had to get through one evening of ballet and I’d have her to myself again. She was a drug and I couldn’t wait for my next hit.

A woman in a caramel trench coat with dark hair in a neat bun dropped down on the bench next to me.

“Mr. Rivers. A pleasure to meet you.” The woman gave me a tight smile.

I shook her hand. “The trench coat is a nice touch. Is that an essential for a private investigator? Like part of the uniform?”

She kept her face flat. Right. No sense of humor. I supposed that wasn’t an essential for the job.

I took a deep breath. “I’ve heard you’re the best.”

She inclined her head. “If there’s dirt on Mr. Reynolds, I’ll find it.”

“Oh, there’s dirt, but I need enough evidence for the police to prosecute.”

She smoothed her pencil skirt over her knees. “I’ll do everything I can.”
