“How do I plan on stopping you?!” she echoes, incredulous. Her manicured brow hikes up, and she gestures to my black eye.

I roll my eyes and tear the door open. “You’re annoying.” I march her across the parking lot to her car.

The sun’s just peeking over the horizon, silhouetting the town of Starlight Falls a mile or so away. I’d stop and enjoy the view if I wasn’t chasing after this crazy creature.

She’s struggling with that damn heavy backpack. I swear it’s full of books. Or bricks. It’s probably how she got so strong. I snatch the bag from her, and my tough girl tries to fight back a smile.

But she loses. I watch it unfold beautifully across her face like the petals of a morning glory opening up for the sun.

How do I know so much about flowers? Four sisters, that’s how.

When we get to her car, she pulls her back door open and rams her backpack into the seat on top of all her other junk. The door slams shut and she turns to face me.

Shit. This is it. This is goodbye.

She opens her mouth to utter her parting words. But I cut her off, pinning her to the side of her car. I press my body against hers and kiss her silly. I feel the way her body sags. The way her knees weaken.

My ego is a fragile thing today. So her visceral reaction makes me feel ridiculously good about myself.

When I break the kiss, her eyes are starry and dazed. With a palm to my chest, she pushes me backward, but there’s no real force to it. “Eww. Morning breath…” she whispers, the tiniest teasing grin playing on her lips.

“Eww. Rotten attitude.” I smirk right in her face.

Snickering, she grabs me by the front of my shirt, yanks me down to her level and kisses me again, losing her fingers in my hair, clawing at my scalp.

So much aggression in this wild girl. Secretly, I like it.

Her soft blue eyes glitter up at me when we pull apart.

“You really are a knockout…” I hear myself whispering as I brush flyaways from her face.

She tries not to grin, but eventually it breaks free, showing off every single one of her pearly teeth. “Forget all the crap I said earlier. You’re pretty damn hot yourself.” She pauses. “Hey. For what it’s worth…”

“Yeah?” My voice is gritty and low.

“Last night was…you, um, you were really good at…that. It was nice.”

I chuckle, my arms locking tighter around her. “It’s okay to just come out and say that I blew your freakin’ mind, Tough Girl.”

Her eyes go spinning around in her head. “Don’t get too full of yourself, Pretty Boy.”

“How about you come back to my room and you can get full of me instead?” I waggle my brows.

She laughs. “You’re a cornball. Get over here.” She grabs at my shirt and kisses me again.

And again.

And one more time.

Like she can’t get enough.

Fuck.

“See ya,” she whispers, her lips hovering near mine. Then she snaps out of her daze and stumbles backward. “I mean—no, don't wannasee ya. Ever again. I mean…You know what I mean."

I chuckle. “Yeah, I don't wanna see ya, either. Get outta here. Have a nice life, weirdo."

"Yeah, have a nice life.” She smiles at me. Then she turns and peeks at the life-like latex doll perched atop the mess of shoes and clothes and luggage in the backseat of my car. “Thanks for loaning me your boyfriend for the night,” she tells my blow-up doll. “You can have him back now.” Tough Girl blows a kiss at my inanimate lady-friend.
