“We?”

“Did you think you were alone in this?” Lily smiled. “Don’t let your ex-husband bring you down or ruin this precious time with Morrison. Enjoy every moment, because they pass much too fast… and we’ll talk later.”

“It’s just that…”

“Let me muddle on this, talk to John, and see if he has any ideas. Okay? But for now – smile and relax. Go kiss your baby… and your even bigger ‘baby’.”

Madison laughed tearfully and nodded.

“Thank you,” she said gratefully. “I guess I just needed to hear it was going to be okay – and a reminder that I need to enjoy this last day with Eric.”

“Yes. Tomorrow will be here soon enough… just like your court date.”

“He just really sours a room.”

“They’re called exes for a reason – which is why I never married until John.”

Gettingout of the car at the house, she saw Eric was ready to go with Max in his arms, grinning at her.

“Hey Sexy Mama… want to go see a movie with us?”

“Mooooovvie” Max announced, clapping his hands happily. “Mama go moooovie?”

“Yeah, Mama is going to the movie,” she smiled and saw Eric’s smile fade.

“What’s wrong, Madison?”

“I’ve got my court date – and he changed the countersuit.”

“To what?”

“That I am ruining his good name and married someone to manipulate the custody hearing, plus he’s wanting me to pay all of…” her voice trailed off as she looked at him in disbelief.

Eric was laughing.

“Gotta give him credit,” he began. “His attorney is awfully inventive, and your ex-husband is trying hard to win his case, because he looks like a schmuck right now after getting slapped with assault and battery charges.”

“He’s unbelievable and your laughing…?”

“Because heisunbelievable, and you need to keep that in your mind. M&M, I love you dearly and that’s not something you can fake. He’s grasping at straws, and it only makes him look more pathetic and weaker.”

“I can’t lose Max.”

“We aren’t going to lose our son, my love,” Eric promised softly, leaning forward to kiss her. “I promise. If something goes wrong, we’ll get the best attorney that money can buy and turn the tables on him – but I promise. Our boy is not going into any other home but ours. Okay?”

“I don’t mean to drag down our last day, but I don’t get how everyone is so calm, and I’m freaking out?”

“Because it’s too close to your heart. You’re too close to it to look at it objectively. They will deal with facts and remove emotion from it. You provide a good home for Max. He’s thriving, and even Dr. Briscoe-Wilcox said he was right on track with his growth. You’re the best mother, Madison, and we’ve got a beautiful boy that is anxious to go see a movie,” Eric smiled tenderly as Max started clapping his hands again, chanting ‘movie’ repeatedly.

“It’s gonna be okay.”

“I believe you.”

“Good. I’ll need you to email me the information for the case, so I have the dates to put in for time off. Okay? I’m going to be here so I can answer any questions, too – you are not alone in this.”

She nodded, almost afraid to speak because she was getting choked up.
