Good. I love you too, and just making sure I wasn’t pestering you.

Nahhh…

We miss you, you know?

Eric sent her a photo of the three of them – him, Max, and Trigger sitting outside in the backyard on a blanket.

We’re picnicking and miss our favorite girl.

I miss you guys too – and will be home soon.

Want to go on a date tonight? The four of us?

Oh? What do you have in mind?

I found a drive-in not too far from here that is playing a Disney movie tonight. Do you want to be the Wendy to my Peter Pan?

You are the best…

Is that a ‘yes’?

Yes!

Can I sprinkle you with pixie dust later?

Only if you promise to fly away with me to Neverland…

Is that what we are calling it?

LOL… sure.

Madison was laughing softly as the classroom bell rang and all the children shot up out of their seats in a rush.

They weren’t alone.

She couldn’t wait to get home to see Max and Eric… and of course, Trigger. They really had their own family unit going, and it had been a wonderful week. Neither of them focused on the fact that he was leaving in a day, nor how much it was going to hurt to say ‘goodbye’. Instead, they were making the most of every moment they had.

Last night they had sat on the floor opposite of each other, putting their socks against each other’s feet… and encouraging Max to walk between them. He was getting stronger and wasn’t so wobbly, but it wasn’t just the joy in Max’s face that he was playing with his mama and new stepfather, but that happiness on Eric’s face was just as breathtakingly beautiful.

He treated her son like he was his own… and it showed.

Clicking on her email on her phone, she hesitated.

Yeah, nothing could ruin her day… except this.

Asher had changed his lawsuit. He had modified it, requesting that she payhimchild support if he got full custody. He was countering that she had ‘trapped’him, pressed charges against him, and was ‘actively slandering his good name in the community’. He also claimed that she had married someone out of retaliation, and that it was not a good environment for Max because of her ‘severe manipulation’and ‘mental games’that affected everyone around her.

Plus - he was also suing her for all legal fees.

“Are you kidding me?” she breathed, feeling panic clench at her as she stared at the email in disbelief announcing the changes to the case, along with a court date.

She finally had a court date – and her ex was stabbing her in the back while he could, twisting the knife.

“Now how do you go from being the happiest woman on earth to looking like the most miserable in five seconds flat?” Lily said from the doorway of her classroom, smiling at her. “I heard your man was in town, but what’s with the frown?”

“My ex-husband again,” Madison sighed heavily as Lily walked over, looked at her phone, then made an audible ‘Harrumph’sound, and rolling her eyes.

“Some men should just not breed, you know?” she muttered under her breath, and then softened. “I’m sorry. I know you love Max and he’s a jewel – but your ex-husband is something special. I’ve never seen anyone so bitter, muleheaded, spiteful, or conniving as him and… well, it’s not going to help anything bashing the man. We’ve got to outwit him.”
