Romano is also a dealer, just of armed weapons instead of drugs. “We haven’t found any of his warehouses, but we also haven’t been exactly looking.” Interfering with the trade of weapons is one sure way of pissing off the wrong people. But if they’re staying on the market, just under another empire, very few will care.

We couldn’t have taken that job on, but Rachel has the means. Her eager smile is enough to confirm my thoughts.

Now let me think. “My guess would be he has a new warehouse nearby.” Romano has made it clear this war is about more than just revenge for what he thinks we’ve held back from him. He wants to take our city too. Take over the hold we have over the underground. It would make sense for him to be trying to build a stronghold where he’s trying to claim a new home base.

“The mayor and the DA are in his pocket,” I muse aloud. “Newly acquired additions.”

“He would have offered them something for that. Something that would also implicate them if they ever tried to turn against him.” Rachel picks up on my thought.

“Exactly,” I agree. I start digging into the information I had collected on both Higgins and Ryans and see if either of them have recently purchased any new properties.

It doesn’t take long for me to find a building Higgins purchased only a couple months ago on the outskirts of the business district that butts up against the bay. Otherwise known as the criminal hotspot.

Not a very smart move for a mayor, but at least he didn’t make the purchase in his name. Not that his alias was hidden very well either. I can guarantee Romano didn’t bother checking it when they made their deal. He probably believed Higgins was already corrupt and an aficionado at such things. Too bad for him that Higgins was as green as they come.

Lucky for us, we have a destination.

I throw up an aerial view of the building on the projector screen. We’re starting to get a lot more use out of this thing than we ever have before.

“Mayor Higgins recently bought this under Humdinger.” That alone is enough to make me roll my eyes.

Alec snorts. “What type of name is that?”

I sigh. “It’s the name of a mayor from a popular kid’s television show. Higgins has three kids under the age of six that most likely watch it.”

Both of them stare at me in utter confusion. “Yeah,” I agree with their silence. “His stupidity really is baffling.”

“And disappointing,” Alec murmurs, making me smile. I can’t help but agree.

We spend the next few hours working together to get surveillance on the building. It’s harder without as much time to prepare, but between Noah and I, we have decked out most of that side of town with cameras.

It’s enough to confirm what we already thought, Romano has weapons stored there. It’s not enough to get a full picture of their security though. There will be a level of going in blind if they choose to do this.

“The sooner we hit it, the better,” Rachel says aloud.

I hate to agree with her, but I do. Fast and reckless plans aren’t usually my thing, despite what the guys seem to think. But we aren’t getting any better surveillance than what we have right here. Not in the timeframe we need.

“We are taking out Ryans tomorrow,” I remind her.

She and Alec both frown, but she continues. “I think tomorrow would be best. We need to start making up for our losses, and Romano won’t be expecting such a quick retaliation.”

I nod along with her words. “His man power is going to be focused on what he stole from you, thinking you’re going to make a play for that.”

Rachel is powerful in her own right. She’s built an empire that proves that. But this is a big ass job pulled together in not a hell of a lot of time. “I know you have your own teams,” I acknowledge, “but I can send a few of my guys for backup. Noah will be here covering feeds, so you can have access to him should you need it. He will be able to monitor both jobs.”

Rachel keeps her face straight, but Alec doesn’t bother to hide his relief. “That would be great, Scar,” he says in thanks. Rachel gives me a slight dip in her head for hers.

I text some of the guys and pull together a team for them to use. I’ll have to let Noah know about the new plan too. He will have to have two lines of communication open to monitor both runs. I get the feeling he will love the challenge though.

Tomorrow is going to be a beautifully bloody day.

The small pitterpatter of feet can be heard as soon as we open the door. Roe must have been waiting for us.

Scar’s elbow knocks the breath out of me as she shoves past me and gets on her knees.

“Momma!” she yells as she rounds the corner, already launching herself into Scar’s waiting hands.

Son of a bitch that hurt. I splutter and try to catch my breath as Scar twirls Roe around in circles, peppering kisses on her head as she goes.
