“A little after six,” he says. “I already got Teddy ready and he and I are going to get donuts before heading to the lab to have our DNA test done.”

At that, I sit straight up, rubbing at my face and trying to drag myself out of the sleepy haze.

“What? I didn’t realize you were going first thing in the morning. Can I help?”

He shakes his head with a soft smile, though I can see a bit of sadness hiding in his eyes.

“Don’t worry. I want to go just him and me. Go back to sleep. Relax. It’s the weekend, anyway. Enjoy your morning off.”

I nibble on the inside of my cheek before I nod in agreement.

“Only if you’re sure.”

“I’m sure,” he says, his eyes scanning my face. “We’ll be back around ten or so. What do you think about going to the beach today?”

I snuggle back into my pillow and tug the blanket up and over my naked form.

“That sounds great.” I might have some homework to do, but I can put it off for a day.

Colton leans down and kisses me again, this time on my forehead and then my nose and then soft and gentle on my lips.

“See you in a bit.” He stands and strides across the room, giving me a wave before closing his bedroom door behind him.

With the dreamy way he woke me up and the fact I’m so tired from the several times we had sex in the middle of the night, I’m not surprised I fall back asleep wrapped in the delicious scent of Colton.

But I am surprised when I hear a doorbell a little while later.

I don’t have my phone with me, so I can’t check what time it is. Hopping up, I grab my clothes, slipping on my panties and shirt before opening Colton’s door.

My plan is to go into my room, put on some clothes, and then hit the front door, assuming if it’s important enough, whoever it is will still be there.

But that’s foiled when I hear a key in the lock just as I’m coming out of Colton’s bedroom, and I watch with wide eyes as Sharon Palmer comes walking into the house. Her eyes find mine almost immediately, and she gives me a knowing smile.

“Now why am I not surprised to find you coming out of my son’s room instead of your own?”

My mouth opens but no sound comes out.

“How about you take a quick shower and change then come have a mug of tea with me, huh?” She closes the front door and walks across the living room and into the kitchen.

Holy fucking shit.

Fifteen minutes later, once I’ve quickly showered and changed into a sweater and jeans—because apparently I feel like covering my entire body now that Colton’s mother has caught me walking through his house nearly naked—I make my way down into the kitchen.

She’s seated at the island flipping absentmindedly through a magazine, and she looks up at me over her glasses as I enter the room.

“Hot water in the kettle if you’d like some,” she tells me, her voice sounding a lot sweeter than I’d expect it to under the circumstances.

“Thanks,” I tell her, keeping my head high as I move through the space that has become home to me over the past few months, pulling down a mug and filling it with hot water then tugging out a bag of herbal tea before coming to stand in front of her on the opposite side of the island.

“How’s the nannying going?” she asks me, closing the magazine and lifting her mug to her lips, blowing softly at the hot liquid before taking a sip.

“Really good, I think.” I keep a smile on my face. “Teddy is a dream to work with, such a positive and bubbly kid. He loves to be read to, so we’ve been doing a lot of practicing. He’s going to be far ahead of his class once he starts pre-K in the fall.”

Sharon nods, her eyes pinched just slightly as she listens to what I have to say.

“We’ve been keeping super busy. Regular trips to the library and the park and lots of crafting and running around in the yard.”
