My driver was waiting outside and I asked when I approached him, “Did you have dinner?”

He nodded and we both got in the car. As the car rolled out of the driveway onto the road, my phone started ringing. I brought it out of my pocket and saw my best cousin’s name, Paula, on the screen.

“Paula, How are you? It’s been a minute.”

“It has Leon. It seems like you never reach out.”

“I’m sorry. You know how it is with work and all. I’m sure you understand.”

“I don’t understand because I work too and I still check up on people I care about.”

“I’m sorry Paula. I’ll do better.”

“I hear you. How are you doing? How is work?”

“Everything is great. I am doing alright; I’m actually just leaving Dad’s house. We had dinner.”

“Oh, that’s amazing. How is he doing? How is his health?”

“He is doing fine, and he looked quite well.”

“That’s great. Uhmmm Leon.”

“Yes?” I asked, getting suspicious of the way she called my name.”

“There’s someone I’d want you to meet. She is great and I think you’d like her.”

I rolled my eyes. “Paula, are you still on this matchmaking thing? You know how these things always end.”

“No! This time is different. She is a personal friend and not a weirdo at all. I promise you; you’ll like her.”

“Paula, I don’t want to do this. After the last girl nearly killed me, you promised that you were done setting me up with women. You’re back at it now?”

“I know I made that promise but I’m making another promise that you’d like this girl. You will.”

“Are you sure she’s not some creep?”

“I guarantee you that she’s not.”

“Alright. Let’s see how it goes.”

“Yaaaayyyy!!” She said, excitedly. “I’ll start putting everything in place.”

“Goodnight, Paula.”

“Goodnight, Leon. I’m positive you won’t be single for much longer.”

I laughed and ended the call.

Chapter5

Valentina

Ava screamed as she ran towards me with her toy. “Mommy! Mommy! See!!” she shoved the little toy train in my face. I laughed and retrieved it from her.

“It’s beautiful.” She ran off into her room to get another one of her toys. Since she turned three, all she could do was run around and play. Getting her to sit down and eat, talk, and take her vitamins had become a chore.

Her babysitter Angela had just left as I had returned from work. A little after 7 months after Ava was born, I opened my small art gallery where I sold the artwork of other artists and my own work. It had been very fulfilling, and I wanted to expand into a larger space.
