The voice on the other end was that of a woman. She chuckled and said, “Seriously? You don’t have my number saved?”
“Uhmm… I’m sorry, who is this?”
“Wow. Maybe this call was a mistake.”
The voice sounded really familiar but I couldn’t quite place a face to it. “I’d appreciate it if you could just tell me who you are.”
“It’s Karen, Paula’s friend.”
I remembered the horrible thing that was our date and how Paula screamed at me over the phone and hadn’t spoken to me since then. “Oh, hi Karen, it’s lovely hearing from you.”
“It is? You don’t even have my number saved.”
“I errr… I used to have it saved. My iCloud developed some issues and I lost a few contacts amongst other things.” I lied through my teeth.
“Uhuh.” She said like she didn’t believe me.
“So how have you been Karen? It’s been some time.”
“It really hasn’t been that long.”
I remained quiet, unsure of what to say.
“How have you been, Leon?” she finally asked.
“I’m very well, thank you.”
“I know the last time, which was actually the first time we met, didn’t end well. A whole lot of stuff happened and I think I might have overreacted a bit.”
The annoyed expression on her face that evening came to my mind.
“I need to apologize for that. Honestly, I was rude to you that evening and I’m sorry. It’s not in my usual behavior to act that way.” I said.
“I could tell something was off with you and that’s why I called, since you didn’t.”
“I didn’t think you’d ever want to hear from me again.”
She chuckled. “For a moment, I didn’t want to.”
It was nice that she understood me and I was grateful for that.
“I think we should plan another date, what do you think?”
I was caught off guard by her question. “Another date?”
“Yeah, I mean we didn’t even get to talk and I think we should give us another chance.”
I exhaled loudly, taking the time to organize my thoughts. I didn’t want to speak to her in a mean manner because Paula was still mad at me. I didn’t want to make it worse.
“Uhm, I’m sorry Karen but I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“Why?”
“My heart is set elsewhere, with another woman. I don’t want to string you along or give you false hope.”
“Is it Valentina?” she asked.
“How do you know her name?”
