“Yes.”
“You’re so good at sweet talking. It’s like your superpower.”
“I’m not trying to be sweet. At least, not in this moment. I’m being really truthful and I mean every word I just said.”
“Uh-huh. What about your date? The one, your cousin, was talking about back at the coffee shop.”
“I told you it went horribly.”
“Yeah, but you were trying to get me to go on a date with you. You could have said anything.”
He took another spoon of ice cream. “I wasn’t saying anything. She was so mad at me before she stormed off.”
“And since then?”
“She called, once trying to set up another date. I told her it wasn’t going to be possible.”
“Why?”
He looked at me like my question was dumb. “Because of you.”
I didn’t know how to respond to that so I remained quiet and stuffed spoons of ice cream in my mouth.
“There’s something I find strange, Valentina.”
“What’s that?”
“I find it weird how no man has been smart enough to capture your heart for himself in all this time?”
I chuckled. “Seriously?”
“Yes, seriously. I have never been so attracted to anyone the way I am to you.”
I didn’t know if to believe his words or not. What if he was doing all this because Ava has brought us together now? Like he was reading my mind, he said,
“I don’t want you to think I’m saying any of this because we have a daughter together. I’ve felt this way even before I knew about Ava.”
I sighed. “Leon, I don’t know.” I paused. I didn’t know if I could trust him with myself.
“Talk to me,” he said, reaching for my hand. His palms felt cold against my own.
“Leon, it’s been a while since I let anyone into my world. I know the kind of power letting someone into my world romantically gives them over me. It makes me vulnerable around them and I’m scared of giving someone that much power. I have Ava to think of and protect, so this is not entirely about me.”
“I’ll never abuse that vulnerability and Ava is my baby too. I love her and will never do anything to bring her or you any harm in the slightest way. I’m serious about pursuing this attraction I feel towards you.”
“I’m not sure, Leon. I don’t know…”
“Allow me to show you how much you mean to me and how serious you and Ava are to me.”
“I am not certain what I want. Can I think about it?”
“Yes, of course, you can.”
We continued with our ice cream. Most of it had melted and when I took a spoon, some of it spilled on my lips. I looked up to find Leon looking at me. His eyes were clouded with intense lust. He started coming closer to me and I didn’t stop him.
His lips went to the corner of my lips where the ice cream was and he sucked it off. After he had finished with that part of my lips, he moved on to cover my entire lips with his, engaging me in a deep, sensual kiss.
