We were getting to the door when the heavily built security man, Kyle said, “I’ll drive, ma’am.”

I didn’t want to argue with him, so I just handed him the keys. He drove us, we got burgers and came back home. We got down from the car and I got this feeling that someone was staring at me. I turned my neck around, but I saw no one. It still made me uncomfortable.

We finished eating and I went to bed because I had to wake up early the next day and go for my run. My alarm rang at 6 a.m.; I yawned and stretched out on the bed before standing up and freshening up. My running shoes were already set beside my bed, so I wore them after I was dressed.

I went to Ava’s room to check up on her. She was still fast asleep. Kyle was making use of the extra room we had and he must have heard me walking around the house because he came out.

“Good morning, ma’am,” he said. I looked at him, he was dressed in sportswear.

“Good morning, Kyle.” I responded, heading to the door. He walked behind me. “Why are you following me?”

“It’s my job to follow you everywhere and protect you.”

“I’m just going for a quick run; I can handle myself.”

“I have no doubt about that but I’m sorry, I can’t let you go on this run alone.”

“It’s around my neighborhood, nothing is going to happen.”

“Yes, I know that but it’s best if I go with you.”

I didn’t want to spend more time on this argument. If he wanted to come with me, he was free to. We stepped out of the door and I did some stretches before I started with a slow jug and broke out into a run. I could hear Kyle running behind me.

Out of nowhere, someone jumped out in front of me, making me halt in a rush. This made me trip and I fell to the ground. The man who jumped in front of me grabbed my arm, trying to force me to stand up and I tried to free myself. He held on tightly to my arm. Kyle ran up to him and attacked him, beating him. The man let go of my arm and I fell to the floor again while Kyle was beating him up. He got up and ran away into the blocks of buildings around us.

My palms were bruised from the fall and they were bleeding a little. Kyle helped me up and we walked slowly back to the house. Vivian was in the sitting room, packing her laptop bag for work when we returned.

“Oh my goodness!” she said as she ran to me. “What happened?”

“She was attacked by a man out of nowhere. It was so sudden,” Kyle responded.

They helped me to the couch and I sat down. Vivian ran to get the first aid kit and cleaned the little blood droplets on my palm.

Kyle stepped away from us to make a call while Vivian sat beside me.

“You should go to work.” I told her.

“I can’t leave you like this,” she said.

“I’m not hurt. You can go. Kyle is here with us.”

She hesitated but finally agreed to go with a promise to call frequently to check in. Kyle was making me tea in the kitchen while I lay on the couch with Ava observing my palm injury when suddenly, Leon burst in through the front door. He basically ran towards me.

“Valentina, what happened?”

“It was just some weirdo on the street.”

Leon examined my body, turning me from left to right before asking, “Where is Kyle?”

Kyle came out from the kitchen with a cup of tea in his hands which he quickly kept on the dining table.

“How dare you let someone lay his hands on her?!” Leon screamed. I had never seen him so annoyed. “I gave you one job. One job, Kyle. Protect this woman and don’t let anything touch even a strand of hair on her head. You assured me that you were competent. What is this rubbish then?”

“I’m sorry sir. Everything happened so suddenly.”

“Leon, please calm down. Don’t yell in front of Ava,” I said to him. That calmed him down immediately. He turned around to find Ava looking at him. A sigh escaped his lips as he sat down beside me.

“I was just worried.” Ava went over to him and rested her head on his lap. He stretched his hand and drew me closer to him. “I’m sorry this happened.”
