“It’s fine. I’m alright, it was just a little bruise on my palm.”

“Move in with me, Valentina. You and Ava. Please. I don’t want a repeat of this.”

“I cannot just move in with you. I have security now. You made sure of that.”

“Val, please. This could have gone in a whole other direction.”

“But it didn’t. I’m fine. I can’t leave Vivian here all by herself.”

“Vivian can come along, too.”

“Leon, I’m not moving in with you over this little thing.”

He exhaled loudly. “Then, I’m staying with you here today.” He said and took off his jacket.

Chapter31

Leon

I had started spending more nights with Valentina and Ava. Sometimes, we stayed at her house, and sometimes at mine. My life was beginning to feel like that of a man with a family, and it felt good to come home and see my daughter run to me with a smile on her face.

Valentina kept saying she was okay after being attacked but I knew it bothered her. She was always restless at night, checking all the windows and doors, not being able to fall asleep because she was afraid. On some days, she jumped up from sleep due to a nightmare and I felt really bad for her as she was always exhausted.

One evening before bed in her apartment, I watched her check the windows multiple times before getting in bed. I suggested to her, “Do you want to see someone about this?” I said, pointing at the window.

“See someone about what?”

“Your newfound routine of anxiety. Constantly checking the doors and everything. It’s a response from the attack.”

“I am fine, just being security conscious.”

“Val, you’re not fine and you know it.”

She sighed and snuggled into me. “I’ll talk to someone.” I knew she said that so that we wouldn’t discuss it further, but I resolved to keep reminding her about it.

We went to bed that night and for the first time, she slept through the night, peacefully. I had to travel for work to New York the next day. It was an impromptu trip and I had to leave the office. I called Valentina to inform her.

“Hello, Valentina.”

“Hey, how are you? I was just thinking of calling you. There’s a show I think we should start seeing after our current watch.”

“What show?”

“Merlin.”

“Val, Merlin is a very old show.”

“I never got to see it and I thought we could watch it together but if…”

I cut her off, “No, No. We’ll watch Merlin. I need to rewatch it.”

“You called to say something, right? I’m sorry, I just overtook things.”

“Don’t apologize, it’s fine. I have to tell you something.”

“What? What’s going on Leon?”

“I have to travel to New York for work.”
