Denishar gets to his feet. “In that case, shall we make our way to sit by the fountain?”

I follow him to the corner where the fragrant fountain is, leading Melinda with me. I sit her beside me and wrap my tail around her. Denishar sits on the other side of the fountain, facing me.

Melinda watches us curiously. “So how does this happen?”

“We sit quietly, letting the scent lull us into a deeply relaxed state.”

“What is this scent? Is it some kind of hallucinogenic drug?”

“It is the essence of a plant that grows in the rainforest of the southern sector. It works on our neural receptors in a not too dissimilar way to the boral crystals, letting us achieve that trance-like state. I do not know whether that constitutes a hallucinogenic drug. Other than allowing us to get into a trance, it has no lasting effect on our bodies.”

“Will it have an effect on me?” wonders Melinda.

“I do not think so, although I cannot say for sure. If the boral crystals had little effect on you, then I suspect the scent of the fragrant fountain will not do so either.”

She sniffs the air. “I can’t actually smell anything. Is it working yet?”

The aroma of the fountain is strong in my nostrils, but I already know that our sense of smell is far more developed than it is in Humans. “Yes, my love. We can smell it. Now, we shall sit quietly and get into our trance while you work beside me.”

“Ok,” she says.

I take some deep breaths in and out, letting myself reach a state of deep relaxation. After some time, I begin to build a bridge in my mind towards Denishar. Finally, we make the connection, and we begin to speak in silence.

“I have grave news to report,” says Denishar.

“What is it?”

“Dresishan was found dead in his home last night. Apparently of natural causes, but the circumstances make us deeply suspicious.”

“It was always a risk, when Melistor cleared his mind of the pernicious evil in him, that someone would notice the change in him. However, we could not let that malicious energy prevail—we had to take action.”

“Rightly so, but evidently, one of his conspirators noticed the change, or perhaps, having been cleansed of his evil, he sought to inform his conspirators that they should stop their activities—in which case, he became a risk to them. Someone evidently thought him enough of a risk to end his life.”

“This also means the conspirators are going to be even more careful than before to lie low and not betray themselves to us if they know we are on their trail.”

“Unfortunately, that trail has gone cold.”

“It is a pity that Melistor cannot remember the details of Dresishan’s malicious intentions that he sucked out of him. He was so focused on trying to maintain control over that powerful energy and not let it seep back out that he could not read it carefully for information.”

“That is where your more experienced hand was needed, Kirimor.”

“I am sorry. I had hoped that he would be able to give me some details once he had time to reflect afterwards, but that was not the case.”

“And neither of our two suspects have done anything incriminating since we started watching them. So far, none of your scans of their known contacts have yielded any information either, except for finding the evil energy in Dresishan. We are currently looking into all his data to try to see if it yields any clues. Until then—”

“I will continue working my way through the chain of contacts for these three individuals. I am managing up to a dozen scans per rotation. Eventually, something will turn up.”

“The fact that Dresishan has been eliminated suggests that whatever is being plotted may be close to fruition. I fear we do not have a great amount of time.”

“Then I shall get Melistor to assist me with the scans. We will try to double the number and see if we can flush out the other conspirators as soon as possible.”

“Kirimor, I do not have a good feeling about this.”

“I agree, it is very concerning. I hope sincerely that we will find some leads soon.”

“May Taya bless us with her light.”

“May she hear our prayers.”
